My first rack!

Team Laura
Alright, so I finished the main heavy building... Now I just have to get some kind of back guard set up so I don't push the boxes too far. My friend and I are going to paint some kind of design on the outside, but I dunno how it's going to look yet. This is 42x28x20, and it's made of birch plywood. I ordered six 40 qt tubs and I'm waiting on my flexwatt.

Yay!!!
I got the home depot to cut the sheets to size, but the guy left eight inches too much on the top piece, so I had to buy a saw and do it myself. Well, I eventually ended up sawing my finger on small piece of wood I was going to make for the tub stop, but I dunno what I'm going to do now. Maybe a dowel? I then smashed my saw cuts with the hammer, and then smashed my thumb. I smashed my toes while moving the thing around, but... it's all good. I think it's worth it?

Looks very nice! You are MUCH more handy then I am! I hope your owies get better in time to complete the project!

Yeah, I have a boo boo picture. It doesn't look as deep as it is, but the worst cut goes in about an eighth of an inch at the deepest point, but it's about a quarter inch long.

No guts, no glory, right? Icky.

Neosporin dude, neosporin!!

Nah, I try not to use neosporin. People have overused it, so bacteria is becoming resistant. My immune system is full of awesome, and it bled a whole bunch... So it's pretty clean, and I keep it clean and let it air out so it'll dry out. Thanks though! :)

What kind of wood?

It's birch plywood. Rather expensive, but that's what I get for not knowing where the cheap stuff is, nor was I going to go search it out... Hardware stores are scary places.

I've been thinking about this has anyone seen a rack of around this capacity with wooden vivs built in I think that would be a great idea.

Just wondered if anyone had seen one before.

Oh and by the way dude buy a drill soooo much easier. Much less painful to but we all learn the hard way.

Oh, I know it would have been so much easier, but I'm a poor college student. a four dollar hammer and a four dollar box of nails? Hells yeah. Now, a fifty dollar power drill? Not so much... I was going to wait until spring break and take my dad's drill, but he's nosy, and thinks I only have one snake. Heh. What's a little blood, sweat, and swear words? Or the urge to light the whole thing on fire? Hahahaha.

Ok is that expensive?

Austin, take some time and read before you post. In her first post, Ziggy stated the type of wood, and then when your initial question was answered (that could have been avoided by reading the first post), she stated that it is rather expensive. So yes, it is expensive. I actually just priced wood out the other day for my own rack building and I think a 4 x 8 sheet of birch plywood was somewhere around $35 (I don't have my list with me ATM).

And great job! Looks fantastic, hope mine turns out as nice!

Yep. I had to use a sheet and a half at about 31.74 or something a sheet. so about 63-64 dollars for two a 4ft x 8ft x 1/2in sheets.

Hey Laura, are you going to pain the rack? I think it looks nice the way it is, but you could decorate it in some interesting fashion--or maybe just seal the wood so water doesn't warp it.

Nice job with the rack. I did some price comparison and found with shoebox racks after the cost of wood, tubs and heat it is really close to the cost of the ones at reptile basics but when anything bigger than shoeboxes are needed it is quite a bit cheaper to build it.

If you haven't already a back guard for it...get some peg board. It's cheap, light, and provides great ventilation! Great job on the rack btw!

Even over the pond students think alike!

I borrowed well "borrowed" my dads drill over christmas to build my wooden viv lol. Students always think of the most frugal solutions.

Where do you study?

Really nice rack Laura! I would seal it, jmo. We use peg board on the back of all of our racks! Makes for a good source of air flow as well.

PJ :wavey:

Thats cool dude. I am starting to house my snakes in tubs. I find it easier and the snakes are likin it
