My first Rocky Mountain Reptile Expo

Smooth_Earth_Snake

0.1 Okeetee; 1.0 Motley;
On Saturday August 12, 2006 I’ll be attending my first Rocky Mountain Reptile Expo at the Denver Merchandise Mart, in Denver CO.
My purpose in attending will be to purchase two baby Corn Snakes.
My favorite Corn Snakes are in the Okeetee Phase (Abbott's). I plan to be open minded and will probably choose one from what is available as well as affordable.

QUESTION: :noevil:
What would you suggest I ask before purchasing my two baby Corn Snakes.
What would you consider to be my three most important questions?

Smooth_Earth_Snake

Hmm... dunno if you're going to find something as specific as Abbott Okeetees there. The biggest breeder of corns will be Sean of VMS Herp, and I don't think he works much with okeetees at all.

I'll have a table there too, but no okeetees either.

There will probably be alot of $5 "okeetees" up for sale, as well as a bunch of other cheap corns. Honestly... I recommend you spend most of your time looking over VMS's table. Sean'll have the biggest selection and is a well-known name and a good guy all around. He's a bit more expensive than the places with a handful of corns, but he knows his stuff and has decent stock. (Or you could stop by my table, but I'll have a smaller selection. ;))

Questions to ask: When did it last feed? Was its last meal live or f/t? Can I examine it closer?

Most everything about the snake's health will be apparent on a closer examination...

Additional Questions: Hatch date? Sex? Poss. Hets? Contact number for the breeder if something goes wrong?

Have fun at the Expo. Let us know what you find!

Poss. Hets? = What is it poss. (possibly :)) carrying in it's genes? As in, if you get a male and a female okeetee that are both 'het' for the motley pattern and breed them together in the future you could get motley-patterned babies. Snakes with popular 'het' (heterozygous) traits in their background are more expensive as people want to produce specific morphs (colours/patters) of snake in the future. Some hets are newer than others, some combine in different ways......... if you are interested in that head over to the genetics section and people who know waaaaaaay more about the subject than I do will clue you in.

If you aren't thinking of breeding in the future, or don't have a specific morph project in mind, then you can find cheaper snakes that are just as fab and healthy as the others :) If someone seems to be asking way over the average expo price for an okeetee, that snake will probably have some long list of hets in it's background.

Let us know how it goes at the expo!

Fantastic info thanks

Dear Ickle_Moose,

Thanks for the detail info. Words like that, (Hets & Poss) will make me seem a little more experience at the Expo. It is good to know why to simlar looking Snakes cost difference prices.

The above info will help me know if I getting what I'm paying for. Thanks again for the education.
