My new grey-banded King

Oh it's ok Ty, I wasn't offended, just wanted to reassure everyone who'd helped me (including you) that the snake wasn't going to suffer from having a clueless owner. I saw a post in another forum that went something like: "I just bought two baby alligators, - how do I cage them, and what do they eat?" I kid you not, it was a serious post.

One final thing - do you think if I got a 30W bulb instead of 40W it would solve the temperature problem?

That could be a good idea, for our leopard gecko we use a 20 watt bulb as well as a dimmer otherwise her viv gets too hot.

I wonder if in some pet shops, older, even adult snakes lose their value (like puppies that grow up) because they aren't cute babies any more. If the shop doesn't have a clientel of snake breeders, there wouldn't be anyone to recognize the value of an adult they don't have to grow up before breeding.

Looking forward to more pics of him!

Nanci

I think that's the case Nanci, his colours are darker than most GBKs so he probably isn't what breeders want. I think he's just perfect though. :)

Well temperature problem is all solved - I bought a thermostat. I've decided to forget about the heat pad, mostly because the lamp does a good enough job and I couldn't find a thermostat that would connect to both of them. I also bought him some new hides because the old ones weren't big enough for him, I think. He now has a flowerpot and a half-log, but he's still not using them. I know these are big enough, but not too big, so I have to assume he just doesn't like hiding. Even at the pet shop, he wasn't hiding.

Sadly I've had to disturb him far more than I would have liked, what with changing the bulb over (I got a blue basking lamp instead of the white reflector lamp, I thought it was too bright for him), removing the heat pad, putting in the new hides and adding a temperature probe. I'm going to leave him completely alone for a few days, I'll only change his water if he uses it as a toilet - so far he's gone on the substrate.

Will post new pictures when I have them, and thanks again for all your help everyone. Despite being disturbed so often he seems fairly happy.
