My snake got mean.....

Like way mean...this is the first time this has ever happened to me. One day she was fine and the next wow.

It's my fault tho. I feed her in the viv, and her viv is too small. Not sure if I can bring her back at this point because she's 7 years old.

So I've made some changes. I've given it an entire new set up to include a larger viv, a larger hide and discovered that my UTH stopped working in the previous viv, so that could have contributed.

Anybody ever had a snake turn then show improved behavior after making these types of changes?

She was supposed to eat this weekend, but given her change of environment, I've let her be. She was out milling around on Saturday so I took the lid off and let come out on her own then picked her up. She was fine with me handling her.

On Sunday, I wanted to feed her but when I took off the lid to get her, she got super aggressive. So I decided to not bother her. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how you would go about calming her down. Should I just go ahead and grab her to feed it or what?

Since you've upgraded her setup I would let her chill for at least 7 days...don't bother her, don't handle her...treat her like she's brand new. Let her settle in and see how she is after that.

They must have been low because her UTH wasn't working...for all I know it's been that way for quite a while...so I put a new one on her new viv which I would have done anyway....I live in Cali where it's always warm so the temps never dropped below 75 or so anyway...

That may have been the cause...my hognose is a complete ass when his temps are off...see if the new mat and leaving her be for a while doesn't help. Do you have a thermometer to monitor her temps?

No I don't but but my pad is always around 72-75 so I can't there being any extremes (above 85 or below 72). She's always eaten and digested just fine

Aggressiveness seems to be a common topic so for anybody who might search this thread in the future, I thought I would give an update:

Since upgrading the size of the viv to a 20gal long and replacing the heater and giving her a larger hide, her behavior has changed 100%. She is now the way she used to be if not better. I am able to handle her with ease.

I handle her when she's out and about by taking off the screen. She gets curious and comes out on her own letting me easily handle her. She would not do this before, instead striking when she saw the top coming off.

She was in blue last weekend and shed on Thursday, so I was able to feed her on Friday (a full 3 weeks since she last ate) and she did with ease. Also, I've began feeding her in a Rubbermaid instead of in her viv.

Some people reading this, might be like no #$%& dumb arse, but I just wanted to let you know what not having a proper set up can do to an otherwise tame breed of snake.

Hi Jason, just saw this and read through your thread. I am so happy to hear that she is better than her old self. Thanks for taking the time to share this experience with us.

This sounds like what I went through last year. She may be gravid with slugs, so set up a lay box for her. She may need a place (dark with damp sphagnum moss) to lay, so set it up, put her in it and wait a few days to see if she has come out. Then you can look in the box and see if she laid any slugs.

Good luck, and let us know what happens!

I'm not sure how common it is, but so far it's happenened to one of my snakes once. Although she didn't end up laying the eggs; she reabsorbed them.
