Well since it's spring and I moved out to the country I decided why not get some baby chicks to put in the chicken coop! They are so entertaining. Two in particular have really imprinted on my hand and will come running when they see it. The dark ones are plymouth barred rock, I got four pullets of them, and the light ones are leghorns, I got two pullets of those.
Dunno if I could feed anything this cute to a snake but I sure hope to get lots of eggs from them in the future!
Anyone keep chickens? I'm a newbie at this so I could use pointers!

Now you have done I am totally envious the river/creek, greenhouse, garden and now these little cuties. I love chickens they are what I miss most about living in the country.

Chickie birds!!! Keep 'em locked up tight at night. They love grasshoppers. They love dust baths. That's all my advice!

Awesome, Jen! I really love chickens too... but given our live in jobs, no way.

I look forward to progression threads!!! :)

They are so cute! They are also fun except when they start hiding eggs on you, LOL!
We also have a chicken 4H (my mom actually runs the chicken section) called beaks and bills, so if you ever have any specific questions I can always defer to her for you!

When I was younger My mom got me and my sisters a chicken. We kept her inside.( It was tough) We used to house pet birds. Like cockatiels, parakeets, and love birds. We had the "bird room". That is were she stayed. I don't know why, but We traded her for a male and female pair. They ended up laying eggs, we tried to hatch them but they never did. Then we gave them to our neighbors that owned a farm. I really want one. Seeing them at the farm store doesn't help. lol.

Anyway, thise are some cute babies!

What ever happened to that chicken breeder doctor vegan person who was here all the time a few months ago???

Well. Time for an update?
They outgrew the 20 long so I have them in a big cage now. They are starting to grow out feathers and in an ugly in between stage of feathers and down. I still have all 6 of them, almost all are getting the tail feathers now except the littlest one. I can't wait to be able to put them outside though! They sure make a mess.

CUTE!! I used to keep chickens and I worked in a feed store for a long time, so I'd be happy to help with any questions that might come up. :)

I grew up with chickens, ducks and geese. I really loved my black fighting rooster (3 of them were dumped on our property one year). He'd kick butt on the big red rooster....

I LOVED the ducks and geese. Not so much the chickens. They're horribly messy and noisy. They always seemed to be dumb as posts. They'll eat anything--and I mean ANYTHING, including each other, if one is injured and can't escape....

Myself, I've always preferred my chickens fried for dinner or breakfast :).

Those baby chicks are ALWAYS adorable, though, aren't they? Too bad they're kinda like kittens--they grow up, eventually :).

Awww, they're starting to look like real chickens!!!

Tara's mom keeps chickens. They are really fascinating animals. Very reptilian in their appearence and actions.

Well, that could be because according to recent changes in taxonomic classification, they are reptiles. As are all birds. Aves is now a "sub-class" of Reptilia. (Sorry... I just read this thread for the first time, and had to make a comment. LOL)

Anyone who has ever lived with parrots, emus or ostriches coulda told 'em that :).

Do you happen to have a link to the information about the taxonomic change? I think I'd love to read that :).
