New additions (Warning: Cuteness overload)

Anyone who has ever lived with parrots, emus or ostriches coulda told 'em that :).

Do you happen to have a link to the information about the taxonomic change? I think I'd love to read that :).

Unfortunately, no link. I was informed of it in my Bio II class last semester. LOL. Apparently, there's also quite a few more changes on the horizon in regards to Domains and Kingdoms.

They are cute as chicks then hit the ugly stage for a while till they are adults lol. I used to be the designated collector of eggs, hens are evil they peck at you!

Still ugly. Still growing like crazy!
The one in last pic (the close up shot) is one I am starting to suspect is a rooster. Its comb is redder and bigger, I hope I'm wrong!

You got chicken how cool, lol I have a thing against bird poo I'm not sure why but I would definitely love to cuddle with them after someone else did poo duty:)

Definatly a rooster! My mother has rocks, and others. She is up to a little over 50 chickens with most being chicks. Oy.

What gives it away, the comb? There's another Barred Rock I'm also suspecting (in the next to last pic with the four of them it's front left)
Ack I didn't want a rooster!

Love chickens, hate roosters the seoncd closest thing to devil spawn, the first being evil biting hamsters. It very well could be a rooster but it could also be a liittle more mature hen. Yeeee gads when is the chicken soup:sidestep:

Gut load some insects and toss them to them. They love things like crickets and mealworms. And they get so excited, it is adorable!

Wow it is hard to believe these guys were so little just a couple of months ago, they are like small hens now.
Two of the barred rocks turned out to be roosters, so I rehomed them. To replace them I ended up getting 3 more pullets, the new ones are buff orpington. They are at the bottom of the pecking order! The four I have left that I raised from chicks are much friendlier. As you can see some of them are hams. I took lots of pics.

I don't know if they are big enough yet... the speckled ones sure look like they are though! How old are they when they start laying, does anyone know? Well, they have a nest box anyway.

Oh my goodness they are huge, it is hard to believe.
If I remember correctly eggs won't come until end of summer 6 months old, I think. It seems like a long time.

I don't understand how they sex baby chickens, I have raised them my whole life and everything I have gotten from feed stores that were supposed to be pullets, ended up with a 25% male ratio thrown in... It seems to me they just guess and hope for the best...

One of the easiest ways to tell a rooster from a hen when they are in that strange gawky stage and they all seem to look alike is the feathers on their neck.. the males will have pointed feathers and the females will be more rounded...

But yeah that one in the picture looked like a male to me, The males in the meatier breeds tend to grow their combs faster than the females, but sometimes in the egg layers like the leghorns, it will be a little difficult to figure it out until their feathers start coming in more...

You have some very pretty pullets there,
I can't wait to get my own place in the country, so I can raise chickens and rabbits again. LOL.

Gorgeous chickens you've got there, Jen!! They are so much fun- I grew up with lots of chickens and turkeys. Forewarning- sometimes they will lay in, on or under anything, in places you wouldn't even suspect!! :)

To solidify this, I once went out to check for eggs, and found one perfectly balanced on the roost, which was a 2x4. Oh how I wish I would have gotten a picture... lol
