New Snake

OK, that's about enough. I had to check the ages on the last two posts. This is one of the most informative forums on the internet. Keeping a snake as a pet is still quite a minority pursuit. It is difficult to find reliable information. The type playground posturing exhibited here does nothing to forward the goals of spreading trustworthy information.

Please all of you experienced owners, be patient with the newbies. And all you newbies be respectful of those people who are trying to help you out...and all of you with bad tempers...well I'll leave that to those with better imaginations than I.

Thanks for your input, Methuselah. :grin01: But seriously, you make good points. HOWEVER, there are usually three functions served by a forum like this one: education, discussion, and playground. Nature of the beast, my friend. :)

I'm still confused as to why you have basic husbandry questions when you have owned a snake for a year.

I apologise for any ruffling of feathers, perhaps I should have framed my contribution in a different way. I wanted to address your questions, but also express concerns, however I accept I came off as slightly juvenille. I wasn't saying you were a bad snake owner, just that the way you see this situation is very different from the way I would see it.

I hope you find your original snake and wish you luck with your new one.

When someone displays irresponsible behavior which results in the loss of, death of, or injury to a snake, then runs right out and gets another, harshness, rather than patience, may be more appropriate in order to prevent the loss of, death of, or injury to the new snake.

Darnit! I just repped you for another post, Becky, so I can't for this one. I agree 100%. :)

Well, I could throw on my couple points at least. I concur; someone in another thread had mentioned the sickening feeling of losing a snake. I feel some of that for other people's snakes, too.

Funny!
Nice viv.
I hope you find your missing snake.

Handle a few times they need to be exercised i put mine on a mat and it slides around but make sure you don't scare it, it is quite normal that your snake is in the water bowl it is bathing it may even be soon to shed it's skin but it will come out soon if it is shedding and then you have to leave it for about 3 days before you can handle it because it is very weak after the shed and will need to regain energy

What....?

You do know that corn snakes are nocturnal and move around at night, right? While one of the fun parts of having a snake is handling it, exercise is not the whole purpose.

It's not "quite normal" for a corn snake to be soaking. Sure it may take the occasional soak, but if it does it frequently, it's because it could have mites.

They are not very weak after they shed. Sure it may tire them a little, but after mine sheds he's completely normal, moving around all night as usual. He also ate an adult mouse the next day. If he was very weak, I doubt he'd be able to swallow a mouse. (Correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't feeding more tiresome than shedding?)

I love a snake after a good shed! My garter is always in his hide during deep shed mod, but for at least a few hours after his shed, he's out and about looking for food! He is so much fun to watch. :crazy02:

That is so neat you posted that. Last night I came home from work to see my garter starting to shed. He had been grumpy and not eating for almost two weeks. He wouldn't even chase a guppy in his bowl nevertheless eat a pinky. Then after he shed, he was zooming around all over the place like a nut. I'll try and feed him tonight.
Cheers!

I did not read all posts, but in about at least the 10 after the one where the poster tells his min temp is 29 and max is 30, nobody freaked out and told him that is TOO HOT without a gradient... I know why that corn is in his water bowl.... or did I read it wrong and is the cold side colder?

I think that it meant the temp fluctuates between 29 and 30. I don't think that he gave cool and warm side temps, although I could be wrong!( I have my dee da dee moments :dunce: )

Sorry - I'm in the US so I don't use Celsius temps, and don't know them. I assumed since no one from the UK or Europe said anything, that the temps were okay. Anybody?

30 degrees celsius = 86 degrees F
if thats the temp over the warm side that should be ok.
now if thats the temp on both sides of the tank=not ok.
the snake needs a cool side and a warm side because they cant regulate their body temp. one of the pit falls of being cold blooded.
