newbie from long island with some questions! :)

Some ball pythons will never switch to f/t. I have a large ball python collection and there are bunch that will only eat live. Typically I do a cervical dislocation before I place the rat in the tub, but some will only take them if they are still moving.

You have to do what you have to do. Do I enjoy it, no not really, but I would rather my snakes eat and thrive than make them go hungry over a moral qualm. It's just one of those things you have to do has a reptile keeper.

Yeah, balls can be tough. So glad most corns aren't!! The 3 balls I had took f/t with no issue, but I know that many are live only feeders. Even if Erin decides to try to convert and only her corn goes for it, it might still might prevent some late at night after work live mouse hunting escapades though. Especially if her ball kills and doesn't eat, if she can freeze it and her corn will take it, that's not a bad thing.

Hi Erin, I'm Colleen :)
I have two corns also....Accidentally! Our first corn escaped after having it only a week, in which we assumed it went down the heat vent. So I went to the breeder and bought another snake. Long story short, we found our missing snake last week, 2 months later which left us scrambling for housing/water/heat for our surprise houdini. I know for a fact both my snakes are females, and I have my other snake in a 90gal tank. I could have divided the tank and kept both in there....but the thought of disease, stress, etc. I wasn't going to risk it. Thankfully, I had a 10gal tank that I got for $15 at Petsmart. I bought a UTH, made a few hides from recycled containers, TP rolls and used a bowl for water. All together, I spend $40 on the tank and UTH. If your super tight for cash, try making a cardboard divider for the tank, as a temporary means....I promise, both snakes would appreciate it. Not too long ago, someone posted that their co-habbed corns accidentally bred. The female was too small, didn't do well, didn't recover well post lay, all the eggs were slugs AND she her growth was forever stunted. It's actually really cruel, and the guy felt like a complete tool. He admitted he read about the dangers of co-habbing snakes, but didn't expect anything to happen like that to his. Not knockin' ya, but the truth is, there's a good chance you'll lose your snakes when it's so easily preventable. To me, I'd rather fork out the $ to make sure both snakes were happy and healthy, otherwise it's a waste of your money buying the snake in the first place if your just setting it up for failure.

On the feeding note, I have no opinion of live vs. frozen. I feed my snakes frozen simply because it's WAY cheaper and way more convenient. I bought a dozen pinkies for $6 and a dozen hoppers for $8. That's three months of food for $14! I have a little tupperware tub I put the bags inside and keep it in my freezer. After doing research, I won't feed live now after seeing snakes be torn to pieces by mice. Not saying that's always the case, I'm just terrified now. I have thought about buying some mice and having my own 2:1 mouse colony so I can feed my snakes pre-killed, and also know that my snakes are eating healthy, well fed feeders. That's another option for ya to save a few $.

I genuinely wish you all the best. Your snakes are beautiful, and your set up looks nice. If you can get another tank, even a 10gal, go for it. You can use paper towel as substrate if you don't have any extra aspen. All your hides you can make. You can grab a dollar store dish for water. You really just need a UTH. :)
Everyone is just trying to share personal experience/advice to help you out as much as possible. Some advise may come off confrontational or rude, but I know that absolutely no one on here has that intention. But I CAN tell you, there's no better place to go to for truthful advice! I have learned so much here, everyone has helped me with my billion questions.....And trust me, I have asked some ridiculous questions!
Check out some of the hybrid threads.....Then you'll see heated and controversial debates LOL ;)

Welcome Erin. Most the people on here willing to hand out the same advice again and again can surely be considered experts. Many of them are raising snakes on levels most hobbyists don't really grasp. To ensure your snakes are happiest go with what is known over what you feel. People do more harm to their pets doing things that they think will make the pet happier but really just decreases the survivability and over health of their animals (for example feeding dogs human food...). Your better off going with the information in good corn snake books (one of the better books was written by a member on here), the sticky FAQs, and the advice of some of the members on here. They have tried and tested most things and probably lost some snakes of their ownalong the way learning. The way I look at it is why do I want to risk my snakes on something I am not sure about.

Not lecturing, I'm a new snake owner as well but I know pets are not disposable.

kiara's tank!

so i guess i made the right decision splitting them up, since breeding was bound to happen. thank you all for your help! i could've had a horrible situation on my hands :\
now, kiara is in her tank with eco earth mixed with aspen, but i haven't seen her in two days! she won't come out! too busy burrowing.. anyone have any advice?

Lovely set ups! Advice on burrowing and hiding all the time? Oat your self on the back. Sounds like normal, healthy, happy corn snake baby behavior!

Let her do her thing while she gets used to her new digs and feels secure enough to come out. Also, can't remember how old kiara is but youngins love to burrow, not much can be done about that. A small tub or tank for babies and youngins makes em a little easier to find and keep an eye on. Honestly, I took Plisskens aspen away until he gets bigger because trying to find a pencil in an aspen stack got annoying.

After a while though, once she's comfortable and secure she should spend more time out at night, or chillin in vines or her hides... but she'll still burrow, just something they love to do.

well thanks guys! :) good to know! I figured as much, but I wanted to ask either way. kitana is a little sad to have down graded but maybe sometime in the future I'll be able to put her back in her big tank. Kiara is about a year old give or take, a little on the longer side but very thin (which is usually for a girl I guess) and I think I'll leave her alone for awhile. hopefully she comes out for feeding though!
