Hi! I'm new here, and new to corn snakes (owning, at least..I've been around 'exotic' pets my whole life) and just got my first corn on Thursday. He was a bit of an impulse buy, even though it's something I've been considering over the last two years. Just decided one morning that I was going to get him, and two days later I brought him home with me! :) I look forward to learning a lot more about him. I've been browsing the forums for a few days, and can't wait to join the community!

Welcome to the forums! There aren't many of us on here from St Louis, but a few show up at the quarterly shows in St Louis :) Where did you find your little anery?

:) From the Tye-Dyed Iguana in O'Fallon, IL. I've been checking there for about two years (it's how I decided I wanted one, really..), and figured I'd rather get it from somewhere where he's been hand-raised, rather than petsmart or petco. Starting off simple and whatnot!

Hi Sutefu,

welcome to the forum. I am also quite new here. I just got myself two lovely young cornies. I had snakes as a boy and now it took me about 40 over years to have snakes again because of my former vagabund life style...and my WIFE !!!! She promised me for many years to move out if I got snakes :dancer:...lol. Now she seems to be rather interested in these lovely creatures. Had I just known before.......

Cheers from Thailand 1.1 Elvis and Queen Crimson

Excellent shop. Matt and his wife are the coolest people. My little Gunn came from there. :)

They most certainly are! They were so helpful in explaining everything to me, and I know if anything goes wrong, I can definitely go to them for help (which I might have to, if I keep having problems with my heater :( )

Thank you so much for the welcome, everyone :)

Buy a new one... they aren't that expensive and aren't worth hassling with. I need to get a new one myself. I have one that cuts in and out. I have it on my big guy, who can handle the change a little easier than the wee ones.

It's BRAND new, like.. I just got it Thursday morning. But my best friend got the same one, and said temp-wise hers was fine. :\ But I finally got a thermometer last night, and the temp reading said the glass over the heater was 101! So I unplugged it for about 30 minutes, and it was already cooled off by then. Which isn't helping at all, since he refuses to go to that half of his cage, anyway..

Put some books under each end of the cage (I use paperbacks) to pull it up away from the heating pad until will maintain the right temps. It'll waste a lot of electricity until you get a thermostat on it. But that will keep the glass from burning the poor thing.

Snakes will go to the end that they want when they want. Of my bunch, Kieran and Michael are seldom on the end that is heated. Gunn & Tigearnan tend to stay on the warm end. Nicevenn divides her time, although lately she's been hanging out more in the middle hide. Daire.... who knows... what goes through his mind.... Gailleann believes she is a tree boa, so she's always up in her hanging tubes, even after feeding, although she does tend to use the hides when she's blue/pink, but not always.

But the offer is there.. just up to them to decide :)

That makes me feel better. I think I'm moreso just paranoid that I'm going to do something horribly wrong and kill him, you know? My friend kept saying how hers loved to be on top of the rocks, etc, and I'm just like "Aris has been hiding under his water bowl...". But I know the tank's warm enough (I usually like my room cold in the winter, so I'm suffering for him by letting my room get warm!) so I'm not too worried. As long as he eats the first time I go to feed him. :)

Welcome!!! Hope you have a good time on here like the rest of us!

As for the heat pad... I've had the same issues with some of mine, but Ginger has some great advice - until you get a thermostat to better regulate your temps. A thermostat is DEFINITELY the way to go.

Hope all gets squared away soon and hope to see LOTS of pics!!!

Hehehe... I plan to take them!! But yeah, I was planning on putting in a thermostat when I get his 20gal set up, because it won't work with his current tank (it's got one of the sliding/locking lids, so there's no where for the chord to come out that the little darling couldn't escape as well!). :) My dad and I are building his new tank together. So it's kind of an "until then..." But I will definitely use the books when I get home. Thank you very much.

I understand totally :) But each snake will have a different personality. Gailleann is a 2006 that still prefers to be arboeal, which normally corns grown out of... I don't think she plans on giving up her airs above ground act :) None of my like to lay on rocks, although Kieran did like to lay his head on his log while he was outside and watch folks. Now, he had a very long log and he can watch from inside it, so he does. My new guy I've noticed has been laying in one corner nearest the desk the last two times it was near feeding time, so that may be something he does...

In time, you'll discover what your guy/girl prefers or doesn't prefer. They are amazing creatures. People just roll their eyes when I get on the subject :) Some know never to mention the subject and others are fascinated that someone would get so worked up over reptiles :)

I'm not sure which sliding lock you have, but I have Michael & Daire both in sliding tops and the cord for my Herpstate will fit out the bottom in the front without leaving room for someone to escape... of course, these are both 2006s so not tiny. If these are the ones that T-DI sells, then we have the same tanks. But the books will work just have to adjust them to the right height. I normally use two under each end. I've also used a stack of magazines to get the bigger/longer tanks up high enough but not have them rock.

I'm the same... one of my friends asked me... "Why is it that with you, EVERYTHING turns into a 'snake' subject?!" LOL.

LOL I don't tend to mention them unless someone else does first or if they ask me about pets... I have one older gentlemen from the dance world, who constantly asks me how they are first thing when he sees me, but he admitted some time ago that he doesn't care for snakes... but he'll let me wax on for ages about them :) I figure he's trying to figure me out :)

Actually, the tank I have is my tarantula's old terrarium that I'd gotten at petco around 2 years ago. Unfortunately, the lid is tight, and I'm afraid if I cracked it even the slightest, he'd decide to be adventurous and get out...and get into the air ducts on the floor. I also have one of the heater's that's stuck to the bottom of the tank.......is that bad? I mean, should I take it off, or should I still try the books with it like that?

If the heater is stuck to the bottom of the tank, the books won't help. You need to get the heat source away from the glass, so you'll need to pull that heating pad off. I'm not sure what you are using for a therometer if you don't have cords coming out. If it's a stick-on type, it's not worth anything. You might want to go to Wal-Mart or the like and get a therometer that is remote. They are set up, so that you can read the outside temp indoors. They are far from perfect, but if you lay the "outdoor" one on it's side in the tank, it will give you some idea of the temps at the snake's level. It'll be more accurate than the stick on kinds. And you want to know the temps at the floor level, not mid-tank.

I got a digital thermometer with the little....thing at the end that you touch it to something and it tells you the temp? The thermometer has a suction-cup so you can stick it to the wall...
