Newbie from St. Louis? :)

Hi and welcome to the forum! :wavey: I'm in Illinois over on the east side, but I go to the St. Louis Reptile shows often. Maybe you can come and meet me and Ginger there.

It's BRAND new, like.. I just got it Thursday morning. But my best friend got the same one, and said temp-wise hers was fine. :\ But I finally got a thermometer last night, and the temp reading said the glass over the heater was 101! So I unplugged it for about 30 minutes, and it was already cooled off by then. Which isn't helping at all, since he refuses to go to that half of his cage, anyway..

That's normal for a heater to be that hot. Most of them get hotter than that. So it's working just fine.

Hehehe... I plan to take them!! But yeah, I was planning on putting in a thermostat when I get his 20gal set up, because it won't work with his current tank (it's got one of the sliding/locking lids, so there's no where for the chord to come out that the little darling couldn't escape as well!). :) My dad and I are building his new tank together. So it's kind of an "until then..." But I will definitely use the books when I get home. Thank you very much.

If you have the heater stuck under the tank and the doors are too tight to fit the cord through, you can do it a bit differently. Put the probe from the thermostat under the tank on the heat pad. Set it for about 88*. That will keep it from getting too hot on the inside of the tank and with bedding should make it just right for a baby.

Hope that helps. :)

Edit--I hit the button too soon. LOL Ginger gives great advice and wont steer you wrong.

Oh! That's a great idea, I'd never thought about that. You've all been a great help so far, thank you. :) I've got to run back out tonight, so maybe I'll swing by the store and pick it up if I get the chance.

And I would love to go to the reptile shows! I just got my first one and I already want a second one. I didn't know they'd be this addicting.

The next one is Dec 28th (Sun) 10am to 3pm at the Holiday Inn Southwest (Viking) at the intersection of South Linderg/Watson, which is Sunset Hills over by AB IT offices/Borders/Petsmart/Home Depot area :)

I've been really good about resisting animals... the last show I went to though I picked up my pretty little Pewter... fortunately for me, Becky is a veeeeeeeeeeeeeeery bad influence :D

Well honestly, I bought Aris without bothering to tell my mom. :) Then I gave her the whole "I'm a big girl now" speech, and..surprise! And to *my* surprise, she thinks he's adorable, and it okay with him. ..as long as I don't feed him in front of her. I do not, however, think she'd be okay with a second snake. So no more for me until I move out, but that doesn't stop me from oggling!

LOL Give her a month or two and she'll be wanting one of her own... or at least that's the way it worked with me... I wanted nothing to do whatsoever with the snake that I bought for my daughter... we bought Lady G in Aug for my daughter's birthday and I believe that I ended up with Kieran in Nov of the same year :) And feeding f/t is not the same as feeding live. The thought of feeding live really bothered me, so I was most happy when the vet gave me the 20 min lecture on why NOT to feed live. I can feed something someone else killed without any qualms :)

Well, Matt told me Aris is eating live food right now, though I'm not too happy about it, really. He's on fuzzies, I think, but I don't have to feed him until a day or two after christmas.

And you can always come to just look and maybe find something for the cage or just hang out with like-minded people :)

Oh yeah, so it's not a shock if you decide to come, there is a $6 admission.

Heheh, well, the 28th is my parents' anniversary, and my bf is coming in from out of town the next day, so I'll have to see what my schedule's like (or if I even work that day!), but if I have a clean schedule, I will be there bright-eyed, bushy tailed, with bells on my toes and a skip in my step! Well, maybe. If I get enough sleep. :D

Hey! I resemble that remark! :noevil:You got to admit..that pewter was well worth it though.

Gailleann was on live when I got her. I missed that part on the breeer's website until after the fact :uhoh: But she ate the f/t without a fuss when I went to feed her.

I think the sooner you do it, the easier it is though.

Well, I got him on Thursday, and Matt said to wait at least a week before trying to feed him, so I figured I'd try on Friday (day after Christmas). I honestly would prefer to feed him f/t, so maybe I'll see about trying to switch him over. It'd also save me from having to make a weekly trip to the store for food. :)

LOL Yes, I will.. which is why I said fortunately... she's beautiful, sweet and becoming alot more active now that she's near the desk and getting use to seeing me much more. Definitely worth every penny I spent on her. Lucky me that no one else snatched her up before I went back... it meant that it was meant to be :) Unlike that mis-labeled stripe that we both missed out on :)

Yup, definitely wait a week to let him settle in. Then try the f/t. If it doesn't work, they don't cost much and you can toss it out. Unlike a live one that the snake refuses... that made me feel soooooooo guilty when I first got Lady G, who was a non-feeder (didn't know it).

I'm going to sound like a total noob, but what does non-feeder mean?

A non-feeder is one that doesn't want to feed. They show little to no interest in food. Some of them can be turned on to it and some of them will never eat and pass away. Lady G ended up needing vet treatment for worms (basically unheard of it a young corn) and the vet tube-fed her once for me to ease my mind, although afterwards she said that it really wasn't probably necessary. All I know is after the de-worming, she never refused a meal. We lost her way too early. The vet that treated her said her insides were really messed up. I figure it was damage done by the worms early on.

It's also why I've never bred before... I was afraid of getting a clutch of 30 eggs and none of them would eat when they hatched and I would be a terrible owner as they died off one by one from not-eating.... maaaaaaaaajor nightmare for me.

I woke up to an absolutely wonderful sight today! My darling was curled up on top of his aspen, for the first time since I got him. He explored the warm side of his tank, sticking his head in every little crook and nanny, and it made my heart melt. I was honestly afraid he was either too shy, or too lazy to move! :) But it's great to know he's relaxing.

And Weebonilass, I feel the same way. While the thought of breeding is wonderful, the reality of it is.. Well, as with any baby-making, there's a chance that even one wouldn't make it, and I don't think I could handle that. That, and I think I'd get too attached to ever want to sell/get rid of them!
