Newbie help! Parthenogenesis--or just a TON of slugs all of a sudden? (pic)

It's so strange- you'd think the parthenogenesis baby would be an exact clone of his mother.

I did some looking and found an article http://www.nature.com/hdy/journal/v90/n2/full/6800210a.html which explains this a bit. Also, in a previous post I linked to an article where there was the first WW viable females from parthenogenesis. While this has never been reported as observed in corn snakes, it fits the description of parthenogenesis in snakes.

A small quote from the article, citations omitted, which should fall under fair use with the link to the article above.

"... This suggests that offspring become completely homozygous. This is consistent with the observation that all offspring are male. In snakes females are the heterogametic sex (ZW). Homozygous offspring will be either WW or ZZ. Since the WW combination is not viable, all observed offspring are ZZ and thus male. Although cytological analyses have not been conducted, diploidy is probably restored through fusion of the egg nucleus with the second polar body, a mechanism known as terminal fusion..."

Good news! (Update)

Well, little man ate on our 2nd attempt!:dancer:

Just because parthenogenesis occurs does not mean that there is not a reshuffling. The same thing can be said when one cross pollinates a plant that is heterzygous for traits and one pollinates the plant with its own pollen. You will get variation.

i would also like to know about this jesus baby and how he is doing? Does he still show signs of a neurological condition or is he normal now? I hope he is doing good!

Hey guys! Thanks 4 checking in with me, I def should have updated this miracle man before now. He is doing awesome, eating and growing great! There's a kink about 3/4" from the end of his tail that is getting more noticeable as he grows. Hopefully it will only be an 'eye-sore' characteristic of his as he grows, but ya' know what...this guy's (his name is Cream) imperfections make him perfect to my wife and I. ;) His personality is as gentle as can be. Here's a couple pics I just took w/my phone.

Hey all, I had quite a few good photos taken of him recently so I thought I'd post an update. He's still doing very well, growing and eating super.

His scales have some unique developments though (I hope it's not a bad sign for things to come). First, he has developed what sort of looks like a kink in his tail (see picture)...it wasn't there when he was a newborn. Second, his skin when he's curled up "wrinkles" almost like the skin of an elephant snake (see picture). The wrinkles have been there for several months now and are always there regardless of the timings of his sheds. And the weirdest abnormality is the lifting of his scales...almost lizard-like!! I personally haven't seen this before. We tried to capture this in a couple photos so check it out, very odd. See ya' guys

Any more updates on the little parthenogenetic corn snake little dude? I'd love to see some updated pics as well as to know if he's still showing stargazer characteristics?
