Our daughter (10) loves snakes and we just got her one in May 4th.

Looking forward to reading more and learning how to tame our newbie as it likes to bite her.

Welcome! Our daughters would probably like each other. Mine just got her snake for her 11th birthday in April. Thankfully we haven't had any biting though. Hopefully yours just need a little time settle in and won't feel threatened after a bit.

My daughter is 7 and she has had her snake for over two years. She has kept it in her room and taken meticulous care of it. It has only bitten her once but my advise when they start getting nippy in the spring I will feed them more often and it seems to calm them down a bit. In the case of this girl I did every 5 days and increased her pray size for a few weeks. She is back to a 7-10 day feeding schedule now though.

Yes I am trying to get my daughter to hold him and she keeps telling me she is scared of it now since it has bitten her once. I am not even sure how to grab it so I am scared to grab it.

There bites really dont hurt at that age. You just gotta reach in and get them with confidence. You can try taking the lid or something and gently blocking the head and scooping them up from the middle. Once your handling it should settle down.

Yeah she fed it in the cage yesterday. Because it kept snapping at her. The snake is 2 years old and is about 2 ft long. I shouldn't be a chicken to grab it but I am. :-/

Give him at least 2 days to digest before you try to hold him. And I always freak out when a snake tries to bite, even though it really doesn't hurt. You can put on a pair of garden or cotton gloves to pick him up. Sometimes they get scared or defensive when you reach in to grab them, but usually they calm down once you're holding them.

I would make sure your tank isn't too hot. Being too warm can make him irritable. Also make sure that you have plenty of hiding spots for him, so he can feel secure. After he's done digesting (in 2 to 3 days), I would go ahead and pick him up. Try to handle him every day for about 5-10 minutes, or as long as he doesn't seem stressed. Just always give him a couple days after eating to digest.

I agree totally. What is the UTH set at and do you have a hide at each end so they can choose the warm or the cool side? The more clutter the better for corns, they love to hide and explore.

You definitely can feed in the tank if it makes you feel better, but I would still try to handle them several times a week just so they get used to you. I usually take each kid out one at a time and hold them while I scrub the water bowl, spot clean, fluff up the Aspen and then I put the mouse in the viv with the mouse on a plastic lid so the corn won't digest any substrate.

I also take this time to weigh each snake and make notes on weight, what they ate (or refused), if they are in blue, when they shed, and anything else that you want to add. By this time the snake has gotten some exercise by crawling all over me and is ready to eat. I put the snake in the viv and they usually find it within minutes, and by the time I am done with each snake I turn around and pick up the empty lids!

At worst the bite feels like the hard loops on velcro touching your skin.

Good luck, and don't hesitate to ask questions.

The temps need to be taken with an infrared laser or a digital probe thermometer placed on the glass underneath the substrate directly above the UTH under the tank. What is the thermostat set at?

I put hides all over, and lots of ground cover (plastic and silk plants) so they can choose a favorite place that is the right temp.

Where is the thermometer located? If it's 90ish up in the air, then he's really too hot. That would make me cranky too! Are you using an unregulated uth? It needs a thermostat to keep it from getting too hot.

I bought a digital thermometer with a wired probe at Wal-Mart. The probe is meant to be placed outdoors, but it works great on the bottom of the tank. It stores a range for both indoor and "outdoor" temps so I can make sure it isn't getting too hot or cool over the day and also reads humidity.

Our house gets really hot that was with it unplugged. It was really active this morning. (I don't know the sex nor the breed)

Here are pictures of the Viv

Please please please, we are trying to help you here! What is your thermostat set at and what are the temperatures IN the viv, right on top of the glass above the UTH?

That dial reader is not what you need for corn snakes, it only gives ambient air temps when you need the temp of the glass under the substrate.

Please answer all the questions so we can help you and this guy!

I am going to go to buy a different thermometer this weekend. House is set at 72, but it's been hot and muggy so the house is over 80.

I looked at the uth last night it don't look like it changes themps. So might have to get a new one for that too.

Your uth is probably fine. The thermostat has to be purchased separately. I have this one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B.... Sent from my Kindle Fire HD using Tapatalk

It is by a window but there is a tree blocking so it gets hardly any sunlight, and it has a curtain for the shade! I pulled it back this morning to get a picture of the snake playing as I haven't seen it play like that yet.

Ok just a thought! Glad he's coming out to play. Ours still hides a lot....he's still a baby though!

If your house is that warm you probably don't even need a heating pad. I live in fl and usually just turn ours on for a day or so after feeding. Younger ones have it on a daily timer.
