So my niece who is almost 11 yrs old is in love with my corn snake. I was telling her that the snake is going through her first shed while in my care. She was squealing with delight!! Asked if she could come watch, and maybe take the shed to school to show it off.
She has done tons of reading on corns since I've gotten mine. She was very excited to find out that when she's old enough to start working that I could maybe breed my snake and she could take one or even two of the babies. She was telling me about the 3-3-3 rule to breeding she read. 30"-300g-3 yrs old is best for the snake to be healthy enough to breed.
Anyhow, I've been enjoying her interest so much and she's being so sweet. I told her if I ever to breed her, that she could for sure have one or two for free. Holy moly, tons of love for this aunty!!!!
Last night I got a call from her almost in tears! Her father (she sees him every second weekend) told her she could NEVER have a snakes. He than started to tell her that serpents are evil and represent the devil. If she were to bring a snake into the house, she is also bringing in the devil!!! What the f**k?? Are you kidding me?
Took me a while to calm her down, and just told her different people have different beliefs. That she is free to do what she wants, and we are still talking 3 years in advance!! After calming down, she thanked me and asked if the snake has shed and if I could set up a video camera so I could capture it for her to see.
But really, inviting the devil in?? Grrr, some people are messed up!:realhot:

Unfortunately many of the people who believe that, have been told that by their religious leaders. None of them actually read in the book that they are using in order to claim that snakes are evil to see that snakes were used as tools of God as well, long after the devil used it as a tool of temptation....

I am lucky enough to have a family that, while they do not understand my fascination, support my owning snakes... Though my great grandmother on my mom's side would not even allow frogs in her house... (because of the plagues)...

I've never understood this belief. I guess I should be glad that while where I live is fairly religious, with several different types of Christian and non Christian groups being dominant in the area, I've never personally heard this belief expressed. A great number of people around here do not like snakes, and there is a generally held view that most people who own them are rebels or white trash. (doesn't matter which race they actually are) Just that upstanding, law abiding normal citizens don't own snakes. But I've never heard anyone mention them being evil because of a religious belief.

It is rampant in the Southern U.S. In fact, I am an advocate for snakes within my own family. I have used the Bible (the very same book that they use to back up their beliefs) as a tool to show them that snakes are not evil. Also, history, and many other things. I have been able to teach my family not to kill every snake they see, though they still kill all of the venomous ones, unfortunately...

I think that's what I don't get about this belief, I can think of at least five Scriptures off the top of my head that either show serpents in a good light or neutral light that in no way says that natural actual snakes are evil and of the Devil.

I agree Tavia, many of these people grasp onto the story of Adam and Eve, and believe that snakes are evil incarnate....

Ignorance is right!! I do understand that he and his family have these beliefs and that's fine. But, there comes a time that you have to grow with the ages. Fine believe that they are evil, but try to understand what generation your daughter (my niece) is growing up in.
When I first met my ex brother-in-law he had these views about cats as well. I was a lot younger than and thought he was a wacko for that too!
I guess maybe its my ignorance for not "getting" how they came of with these beliefs. Though my father who was raise on the same bible as him, has said nothing of the same 'evil' snakes or cats are. In fact, my father thinks snakes are very intriguing. He says almost hypnotic to watch and finds the shedding of the old skin as a new beginning.
The way people take what they read in such different ways just amazes me

Actually my friend who is a Shaman stated to me that snakes signify change, Shedding the old and starting with the new...

I agree Tavia, many of these people grasp onto the story of Adam and Eve, and believe that snakes are evil incarnate....
I agree! And wonder if they pull stories from other places than just the bible? Like medusa, or the unknown of the Loch Ness. Than just creat a belief out of it all.:blowhead:

That is what i do... Well, what I have been doing with my own personal beliefs... I am a Christian, but I am studying all belief systems and taking what I can from them to better myself.

I have always believed that there are animals on our planet that could be ancient that we have no clue about. Look at big foot. The higher the human population gets in numbers, the more sightings we see reported... Now, that could be herd mentality, or group paranoia, or it could be that people are really seeing things... I also believe in ghosts and evolution... Many of the things that I believe exist would get me thrown out of many churches... LOL

But yes, they probably do grasp on to those things as "proof" of their beliefs, they just do not say them out loud...

I wonder too, if the people who believe things like that are just scared silly by snakes and somehow by believing they belong to the Devil or are otherwise evil, legitimizes their irrational fear of them? It's now something they are commanded to loathe and therefor it makes it so they aren't a wuss?

That's just it. I know a pastor that spoke on the subject of snakes. He stated that God did not tell man to loathe the snake, or to crush it under his heel, but was speaking about the Devil. I liked that sermon (or speach) I cannot remember who it was that said those things. Needless to say, the Pastor has snakes...LOL

Dig into the Bible, and find the areas in which God's people used snakes for healing and other things... Then show him the part that says all things are made clean. It may take a while of repeating yourself, but you may get through to him one day...

To through in my 2 cents, humans are much more evil than snakes. So by using her father's logic, every person that enters the house is bringing in the devil (not saying that is actually true just using his logic). Animals are animals, there are no evil ones. To be evil, the creature has to have the capacity to understand the difference between good and evil. Snakes definitely do not have that ability. I am glad you are telling her otherwise.

When my daughter was about 4, we had a frog move into her backyard wading pool. One week at Children's time, the pastor asked the kids what blessings they'd received, and Alli responded "I got a frog!" The pastor muttered under his breath "Isn't that a plague??"

Wonder what he'd think about the 5 of them now living in our family room?

I think it's more using scripture to justify your fears than anything else.

Such a shame that she's been exposed to that viewpoint. But you don't know, that could be out of character for her dad, and perhaps he was tired and snapped. For all you know she may have been nagging him for weeks about snakes. I'm not trying to excuse what he said, its not acceptable at all, but it just reminds me of something my mother said. My mums always been Christian but hasn't actually been to a church for years. Me and my sister sat in the living room to watch the first twilight film together (when it first came out on DVD) and she came into the room and screamed at us that it was too loud, to turn it off because vampires are "of the devil". She has never come across as being a bit fundamentalist or anything before and never been "like that", she's always been liberal. A year or two later she's actually bought the book series and films for my sister. And watched the films too!

Agree 100% I remember as a kid I caught my first snake my parents were dead set against snakes because Father Thomas said they were evil. I asked Father Thomas if God created everything his reply was yes, to that I replied then why would God create something evil? he had no answer. Being the 11 year old rebel I was then told him sounds like Heavenly BS to me that snakes are evil. My bottom was pretty red from the beating my folks gave me. I remember my mouth getting me many beatings. I didn't care one bit I kept that little snake for nearly a year in my parents HOLY house and I even took it to church with me a couple of times. I think many of Gods creations get a bad rap because people are not willing to listen to reason and are to scared to know the real truth it's easier to live in the little shell known as ignorance. I personally never witnessed nor have I heard and anti Christ chanting coming from my snake room on a full moons night.

3-3-3
3 years old AND 3 feet long (not 30 inches) and 300 grams is the minimum size an average female cornsnake might be bred at. Kinda like saying a 14 year old human is the minimum size acceptable to make some babies.

As for her Dad's control issues, around what pets she keeps in a house he does not live in, and perhaps other stuff too, not really my place to get involved there.
