Olympic tragedy

I would just like to add that I was shocked when ABC news played the video at primetime without warning viewers that it showed a death. I personally don't like watching such videos, and I certainly don't want children seeing such things without giving parents a choice about it.

I have to agree. I think it is reasonable to show the video, because I don't think it's the newscasters job to protect children from anything that any parent might consider unsuitable and it was news, but I DO think it is the newscasters job to LET THE PARENTS KNOW so they can protect their children as they see fit. A tiny baby wouldn't understand, and a teenager might well learn something about the real risks of extreme sports, but an elementary schoolchild might well need to be protected from seeing this, and parents should have the option.

I didn't see the footage, is it full of gore?

If it's just a man going airborn and slamming into a hard structure, then I would not feel the need to shelter my 7 year old from the video. I would even tell him that the man died.

Other people are different from me...we all have opinions...

I saw the video footage of the accident. It was horrible. What really bothered me was the footage of this boys father crying and saying that he never wanted to see it. I'm glad they stopped showing it.

It's not gory, but parents should have a CHOICE. Your kid can handle it. Other kids, maybe not.

Nancy, I found this article today.
Since it pertained directly to the original post I hope you don't mind my posting the link here :

Thank you Eric for posting that article. It's a pretty sad commentary on what teams and countries will do to try to win a competition.
It's also sad to me how they blame the man for his own fate and then turn around and change the track structure and the configuration of the turn where the man was killed.
Just a sad incident all the way around.

I think you need to remember that this is an incredibly dangerous sport. These guys are going 90 miles per hour with no protection of any kind. It is foolish to think that someone won’t be hurt. The participants all know going in that it is a possibility and they have to except that risk. I am sure the people that designed and built this track did their very best to make it as safe as a very dangerous activity can be.

I don’t like the way people always want to place the blame on someone else. The guy who decided to participate in a dangerous sport needs to assume some of the responsibility. Had he chosen figure skating instead he would have run the risk of a bruised toosh.
