OPINIONS NEEDED FROM PROFESSIONAL (ACR) BREEDERS

Lovin' My Snakes!
I'm going to be moving from Albuquerque area to Las Vegas inside of two months. I need your opinions regarding whether I should ship my 3 snakes vs take them along for the desert drive, which will be 48 hours (including 1 overnight). Daytime driving average temps estimated to be around 75F-80F (almanac)...I have no AC in this vehicle.
I have one adult and 2-2010's.
Thanks so much.

It sounds very doable to me. Just as long as they don't get overheated. If you do ship them, is there someone you trust who can care for them until you get there?

Actually Starsevol, I was thinking of me getting there first and then having them shipped. But if the drive sounds do-able and not overly stressful...thank you. :)

Well I'm no professional breeder, but if I were in your shoes, I'd take them with me. I'd feel way more comfortable with me being right there to monitor them, give them cool packs etc., as opposed to shipping them using someone who probably knows nothing about snakes, and probably don't care about them either. Unless you just absolutely have no room to do it, I'd take them on the road trip. Good luck on the move.

Mitch

Then there is whole question of whether you FedEx Certified and actually able to ship? Yeah, a short drive, you should be fine. As Beth mentioned, don't let them over heat or get too cold. Maybe a nice cooler to keep them a consistent temp?

I would almost always rather bring animals with me than entrust them to a third party for delivery. If you have an overnight in a hotel bring them inside with you. A cooler would be perfect for the trip. Don't feed them about a week before you leave so you don't have to worry about digestion issues, regurges or poop. Make sure you water them on the trip, avoid huge temperature fluctuations and they should do just fine. They are tough little boogers. Plus having them with you will eliminate some of the stress of worrying about how they are doing.

I am sad to see you leave NM, but I understand your reasoning for doing so. I would take the snakes with me in my vehicle. I actually drove from Alamogordo to Holden, La. with a corn snake in the car with me...lol, she did just fine.

Terri, thank you so much for your input! I already had solidly in mind not to feed for a week before. ;)

I really appreciate all this advice.

Oh Aaron! You're the one person here in NM that I was truly hoping to meet. Thanks for telling me about the drive you took...that was a doozy!

I vote take them with you. If you need me to, I can send you a couple big gel packs. I'd buy a probed thermometer and either pack the snakes in a cooler or in a shipping box.

Well, I'd probably freeze them, actually. The ones I have are the big two pound ones- if you need some. They stay frozen quite a long time. Or you can use small ones for cooling, and big ones for heat sinks.

My snakes are seasoned travelers and they will tell you that they would rather go for the drive! ;)

I have driven with my snakes from Colorado to Florida, then to Illinois, then to Texas. I put them in an insulated box (or cooler) with a probed thermometer to monitor temps. If it gets too hot, you could add a cool pack. I would be much more comfortable with them with me rather than your other option.

CS4SALE, thanks for your brilliant answer. I told The Mister what you wrote and he said, 'the AC is working! I fixed it last Summer'

...nice to find that out, but HEY...I'm now fully climate controlled and will fear not (I will of course bring both heat and cold packs just in case). ;)

crossed my mind when I pictured your snakes and you.

I take mine back and forth with me from school for summers and long breaks, so about 3 times a year. I have 41 quart sterilites, so sometimes I just wedge those into the car, but if there are extreme temperatures or overnights I stick them in a pillow case and put that inside a beer cooler/lunchbox type thing with hot or cold packs and balled up newspaper or paper towels. I use a probe thermometer with the probe inside to make sure the temperatures stay in a safe range. The kind of cooler I have zips around the top, so i just leave one side open a bit for air circulation. I had my yearling in there for about 48 hours in the beginning of December because of some unfortunate delays. Outside temp was around 12, even without the car on for some 8-10 hours, the temps inside the cooler were still above 70 and King Crimson was completely fine, if a bit grumpy. He ate 6 days later and has been totally fine since.
