Our new mastiff puppy

Well, Asia is almost 6 months old now and doing great. She has to be the calmest sweetest dog I've ever known. I don't think there is an aggressive bone in her entire body. LOL I've been training her slowly, giving her time to adjust and figure out the rules. But honestly she's not very active or destructive so she's easy to deal with. The temperment on this breed is amazingly laid back.

We did run into one issue with her though. About 3 weeks ago I took her to the vet and she was still under weight. 48 pounds at 5 months is way to small. So we switched her food/diet and started giving her vitamins. As of today she is 61 pounds. Still about 10 pounds shy of where she should be but the vet said as long as she's healthy, eating and gaining weight not to worry right now. He said that the breeder wasn't feeding her right by giving her only 1 meal a day and it's going to take some time for her body to make up what she was missing. As you can see, she's a happy girl. LOL

The girls are showing some love :)

OK..I asked if they wanted a treat and my son popped in..hmm weirdo!

Wow, she is getting beautiful. That's great she's getting back on schedule with her weight, she should be as big as a horse in no time :). Your vet is probably right about the breeder under feeding too, my German Shepherd was probably around that weight at that age, and I was feeding her 3-4 times a day. Asia looks very good now though, and healthy as can be. I love Mastiff's, and I'm glad to hear she's such a sweetie.

Thanks for the updates!

Thank you. :) For now her food is left out 24/7 because when she eats she nibbles. I have a rubbermaid tote that can hold 30 lbs of food. For a while it took about 2 weeks for the dogs to eat it all. Now I'm refilling it once a week. So at this rate some one's going to get bigger. LOL

Great dog! Glad to hear she's putting on the weight! You'll probably have to take on another job soon to buy food for her.lol

Holy cow... literally :)! That's quite the appetite. I remember the puppy stages though, they have insatiable appetites. Ciana eats half of what she did as a puppy, but she's pretty much at the weight she'll remain at.

As for leaving the food out 24/7, I know the feeling. What I've found is that Ciana (my dog) eats more regularly if she gets set meal times, but with Asia needing to gain weight perhaps it's best, I've just noticed that it made Ciana slightly more picky. I found that Ciana got very bored when the food was down too long, and sometimes it would be there most of the day because of it. Now if she doesn't start to eat within 1/2 an hour the food goes up for at least a 15mins, so she has learned to rely on a more stringent feeding schedule. She also slightly guarded her food, so this was part of breaking that too, but it did help her curb the nibbling problem.
Just a little thought from my experience. If she's going through that much food you might not have the same nibbling problem I had to deal with, but it seemed to at least help me.

She is very, very cute though. There isn't much that can really prepare you for how big they really are, but they are gorgeous dogs, and they seem like sweet and gentle giants.

I'm so glad that she is doing well and is getting along with your other doggy. She is a beautiful dog. I can't believe the breeder only gave her one meal. My dog is only a 45lb dog and eats 3 times a day. I'm sure Asia will be back to a normal weight soon though.

Both of your pups are gorgeous, Becky. I have a black lab named Zoe (pronounced Zoey) too! My other is a Pyre/St. Bernard mix. I love big dogs with kids. They're very protective but also very tolerant.

We go through 90# of food/month. Crazy!

I'll say, she sure looks LARGE!!!! Wow. She is getting BIG.

BOTH of your dogs are quite gorgeous!!!

... and your son seems like quite the riot! :)

Thanks. I was pretty surprised at that a breeder would do puppies like that. She told me that they lived way out in the country. So at night she put the dogs in a pen, to keep them safe, then in the morning she fed them and let them run all day. This breed of dog HAS to have more than one meal a day to maintain their rapid growth. Some people. :nope:

LOL I guess great minds do think a like.

That puppy's getting huge! Glad to see the girls are settling down and getting on so well now.

Thank you. You should be here when they can't get outside and decide to do a chase scene through the house. Look out!

Thanks Fred. That boy is my oldest and he is natural comedian. He can bring laughter to the worst of situations. I told him I think he needs to go to be an actor. LOL

OOOOO I didn't realize the first thread was a couple months old, now I feel dumb!

I do have something to add now too though. :) My Dane also was very thin as a pup and the vets did not investigate for the longest time. They kept saying it was healthier for her to not be heavy, but she was SKINNY. When the vet finally did a fecal test it showed that she was lacking some of the enzymes necessary to digest fat. I started put this in with her food.....

She gained a good amount of weight with in a month, she was on it the rest of her life and was always a nice healthy weight. It sure couldn't hurt to try. :)

Beautiful girls!

Thanks Carol. This girl is just now getting enough meat on her to cover her bones now. Thanks for the link too. My husband said we are going to try some of that with her and see if it makes a difference. :)

Well, it's been a year since I updated this thread. So I figured I'd share Asias progress. :)

For a while, even with changes in diet, she wasn't retaining the weight she'd gain. Come to find out she had tapeworms. It took at least 3 months of treatment to finally rid her body of them. The vet said the medicine usually killed every thing the first time around but some times it's an ongoing battle. We treated both dogs for fleas monthly with a pill called Comfortis to help battle the tapeworm issues. Side note--Comfortis is a wonderful flea treatment! It kills fleas within 20 minutes of taking it and last for about 30 days!! After we were using it for about 6 weeks, our cat didn't even have fleas any more. We don't have to treat the cat as long as the dogs take the pill. OK..back to Asia..

She is doing great now and getting closer to her end weight. She's almost 1 1/2 yrs old and some where around 130 lbs. yay!!

Here's my girl all growed up, almost. LOL

Thanks for the update! I love mastiffs and she is beautiful. It looks like she has found the perfect spot with your boys to lounge in/on. :)

beautiful mastiff. is she a big baby? because usually the bigger dogs are just big stuffed animals if you ask me. bu they are awesome dogs for kids because the kids jump on them and play with them and they just lay like a log lol

but very nice

My how they grow :D

I like comfortis because you can use it and it doesn't matter if the dogs go play in the rain or get muddy and need a bath... it doesn't wash off like topicals.

But.. I live out in the country and comfortis does nothing for ticks :(
