Petshop rescue, emaciated anery

I don't know about Nutribac but I sure hope she pulls through! They are so cute and sweet, I can't imagine losing one. At least now she has a chance.

People are always saying that snakes can't digest dairy, but they digest pinkies with full bellies just fine. I wouldn't feed my snake a chunk of cheese, but I feel like the milk soaking thing shouldn't be dismissed on those grounds alone if it has worked for others in the past. It certainly works for pumpkins and store bought squashed that were picked before they were ripe. Why not an emaciated snake, especially if they absorb it though their vent? Milk is better for hydration than water, after all.

Babies may eat pinkies, but they are not digesting the milk. It's passing through with the waste and offers no nutritional value. It's like giving cats milk once they are adults. They may like it, but it's not good for them. I might add, that we feed pinkies to cornsnakes. In the wild, they might likely never eat a baby rodent that hasn't already been weaned. Finding a nest of pinkies that a mother mouse won't defend is like robbing a bank in the middle of police escort. Most baby snakes take lizards and other small food sources such as that....not pinkies with milk!

Interesting but still not convinced. I think you could get much of the same nutrients out of pedialyte or gatorade and water that you'd get with something like milk. Not sure why people are tube feeding and perpetuating non feeders anyway, but that's another thread. In this case, the non feeding could be purely poor husbandry and not the animal's poor eating instincts. Hard to tell.

Probably because in the beginning, with your first babies, or with a rescue, it's hard to give up.

Quite probable except that it's Kathy Love and other breeders who have been around for a while. With rescues it's different. If you have a severely debilitated animal that is that way from illness or poor husbandry I see no problem with helping it get back on it's feet. I do have issues with helping a poor feeder perpetuate more poor feeders.

I agree; I would never tube feed a non-feeder. I'll try a few things, though, to get a natural lizard eater to eat a mouse pink. I think some of the time "we" are in such a hurry to get that first meal in that we don't give them enough time to burn up all their yolk and they just aren't hungry enough to care for the first few feedings, and by then they have been labeled as a non-feeder, whereas if one would just wait, there would be a better chance of a successful first feeding without hassle.

I agree. I wait until after shed and then offer food. I rarely have ones that won't eat but if they don't, I wait a week and try again. I rarely feed more often than every week to 10 days on babies anyway though.

So is Nutribac something I should buy just to have it on hand just in case I ever need it? Sounds like it is probably a good idea.

I hope your little one is still doing ok.

She is worse today, limp and listless. Without energy to move a feeding looks pretty slim. I'll offer a hot pink in a delicup and paper bag overnight and if she doesn't take it and is still alive in the morning I think I'll end her suffering. I'm pretty upset with the petshop on this one, I offered so much advice when they first got them and if they would have just tried maybe it wouldn't have came to this. Thanks for the support everyone.

did you try soaking in milk? I would at least try it, like that link said, you have nothing to lose. You are braining the pinky? What about feeding tails like Nanci has recommended? That might not work for an ill snake, maybe it's more for non-feeders.

I hope she makes it. I had a sick parakeet and I knew he wouldn't make it and I had a dream last night it died....today it died :(

I don't like seeing them suffer either, I would try the milk though at least.

Very sad for the snake. At least you are giving it a try.....maybe she'll surprise you.

I would say, try force feeding her a mouse tail. If she doesn't perk up after that, she probably won't :(
At least she had someone to care for her in her remaining days.

When we went to check on her she hadn't moved since her last move at noon, and she had passed on. I'm not surprised, but still saddened at the loss. If anything I guess I can tell the petshop I tried, and maybe suggest they not buy such small animals in the future, and maybe learn a bit more about the husbandry associated with an animal they plan on selling in hopes they can avoid such things and maybe inform their potential buyers how to properly care for them. I don't understand.... Isn't it good business to have snakes in individual tanks, full of every possible accessory they would need so they could sell the whole package to a customer? I'm so revved, talking to the guy about hides and he said he didn't like them cause the customers couldn't see the snakes. GAHH! Pfff.... End rant.

I'm sorry she didn't make it. That's very sad. I was hoping for good news. Do tell the petshop. A week or 2 ago someone here was buying or looking at Petco snakes and none of the employees or the manager were willing to get the snake out for her to see! They told her she couldn't get it out b/c of liability. They finally managed to get it out with a pen. That is crazy. Especially that the manager won't do it! They all need some lessons in working at a petshop.

It is sad, but you did all you could for her.
