When i read about cornsnakes and watched youtube videos about them all everyone said was how docile and easy to handle they are. I bought one and mine is anything but docile and easy to handle. If you go near the aquarium and he sees you he get into a defensive posture and hiss'. He bites often when handles. Why is my snake the opposite of what everyone told me. I love him but im getting pissed because my intent was to have a snake that i can handle and enjoy.

How old is your snake? Babies are MUCH more defensive. They usually outgrow it but you get bitten a few to a bunch of time first. Cage aggressiveness is common too, and the snake may well be fine once out of the cage.

What are his temps? Too hot or too cold could make him irritable. Does he have lots of places to hide? Being scared all the time could make him irritable.

Does any of this help?

he is three years old aprox. he wasnt handles much in his first three years. Iv been handling him regularly other than after feeding. I keep the cool side about 75 and the warm side about 83. he has a cave style hide on the warm side and one made of fake plants on the cool side. He also has a water dish on the cool side.

none of that really helped because he is a grown snake.

Iv had it for 4 weeks. I got it from a place called "Reptile Gardens" its a reputable reptile place that is like a zoo but they also help movies and artists like alice cooper by providing reptiles for there shows. my snake use to live in a reptile enclosure with 2 other cornsnakes.

Keep at it. Handle him often. If it makes you feel better, wear gloves and long sleeves (just don't tell anyone you are doing that LOL). The more often you handle him, the more he will see there is nothing to be afraid of.

But... and not to go there YET... There ARE snakes that just don't ever settle into handling very well.

As stated above, even aggressive snakes, once they are out of the cage and in your hands, will settle down a majority of the time. For these snakes, many people use small snake hooks to get the out of the cage.

Ill keep at it, i don't mind getting bitten it doesn't really hurt. Except last time i handled him i was sitting cross legged on the floor and it big my toes ha ha that one actually hurt.
