Please, learn how to spell and use proper grammar!

Sometimes my eyes hurt reading posts. I like to read well written posts. But I have to admit that I for one can't make a post without making an error. And I do proof read my own posts before posting. It's just that I only write English on the internet. So words like 'waste' I often write down as 'waist' and I simply over look these errors. Hours later I recognize the mistakes I made. LOL

Imho

I think that there is a difference between chat room people and posting people. Simply put, I can forgive terrible spelling in a chatg room but please be courteous enough to at least check for obvious errors before posting. I mean it's just the polite thing to do. :spinner:

Oh, by the way I teach Grade 3 English so I guess I'm kind of biased. :dgrin:

Just a side note.
I have a 3rd grader and two 4th graders who like to read this forum with me. They often ask me what certain misspelled words and slang words are because they can't understand them. One of my daughters loves to write stories but she has a terrible time with spelling and gets very frustrated. I use this forum as an example of why it is so important that she work very hard to learn proper writing skills. It doesn't matter how great your story or comment is if no one understands what you are trying to say. Especially if an eight or ten year old can't figure it out.

I do agree with taking the time to make sure others can understand you. There is no excuse for not taking a moment to look over what you've written. There's no reason to be in such a hurry that you can't check yourself.

Minor typos are one thing, I can look beyond that. I agree that its the idjits that cannot string a sentence together, refuse to acknowledge punctuation or capitalization as basic rules of written communication and generally come off like they're from another planet that irritate me. Handicaps are unavoidable, but there is no cure for stupid.

I agree with a lot of the comments above. I almost always use spell check, not because I can't spell, but because my typing is terrible and when proofing my own work I tend to read it as I meant it to be and not as it actually is. When text messaging from my phone I will sometimes resort to things like "R U" to cram my message into the space alloted but I would never do it in a forum, email, or other place where space isn't an issue. If I can't understand what someone is saying, I just move on. I do not have the time or patience to decipher the "speech of ignorance" that some people like to use. I am not a champion speller but to be honest, my spelling has improved since my son started talking. My best friend and I spell to one another when we are talking about things we don't want him knowing about. We are so proficient at it that very few adults we know can keep up with us at this point.

I just wish people would speak and write English in a manner that others can understand and appreciate.

A list

I am 10 and have posted here before and so has my 8 year old sister and 10 year old brother. My 9 year old brother doesn't post on here, he has me do it because he takes forever to type. I think we are the kids Mr Serpwidgets was talking about. We have very good teachers and I am going to tell my class that there was a topic about grammer and spelling on the cornsnakes forum. They will think that is cool.

Maybe someone who speaks chatspeak could make a list of some of the words they use so we can look at it if we are confused. Since I started looking at this website, there were a lot of times that I did not understand what was being said, but when I asked someone always explained it to me.

My brother does not use spell check. He is an "idjit" sometimes.

Oh yes! It really annoys me to see kids (18 and younger) type with such laziness.

I'm back in school getting my certificate to teach high school bio. We were just talking about this in one of my classes yesterday. Apparently it's quite common now for students to turn in essays/assignments not only with poor spelling and grammar, but with that annoying, lazy chat room lingo that we see on here. And to that, I say, "Wut!?"

I was glad to see somebody start a thread like this, because it's about time....

Someone else doesn't always use spell check either, unless they've added "grammer" to the dictionary as a variant spelling of grammar. :santa:

The best part is this young that posted ( Corny Kids ), at least we can understand him and it is not some garbled garbage. I have a horrible time with spelling and grammer, but personally I think I do a heck of a lot better than most High School Grad's and sometimes better Colledge/University Grads. I have a learning disability ( or at least this is what the Liberial Leftists call it, the cure might be ritalin or some other type of anphedamine ). I rarely have a post that doesn't have a mistrake ( LOL ) in spelling or grammer, but I hope my posts are a lot easier to read than the Geek Speak or Ebonic drival I deal with every day.

CornyKids, your parents should be proud of how well you can spell and articualte a sentence, using what seems to me, is proper grammer. Keep up the great work!

Regards..

*lol* I read my post, and realized in the very first sentence I made a boo boo..

I should have read....

The best part is this young person that posted ( Corny Kids ), blah blah blah..

Regards..

Considering the main theme of this thread, it's funny that some of the participants in the discussion are still not using spell check. No offense to anyone intended. :)

LOL! I agree with Dean, so far just on this page I have spotted: Amphedamines, Colledge, grammer... all sic. Hey, even the English teacher who posted made a mistake. Is it really that important on a snake forum for everyone to spell everything right? When someone corrects others but can't spell either, it reminds me of that old saying, the pot calling the kettle black. I do have to admit the chatspeak bugs me a little esp. when I can't understand an abbreviation.

Well, I think the issue of this thread isn't the minor misspellings but rather the people who can't seem to put a single sentence together that makes sense.

Stuff like "wut u meen i fed my snaek 2 much i gif him olny 1 mous a day teh guy at teh pet stoer sed it wuz fin 2 gif him 1 mous a day so he dont get hunngry i dont want my snak 2 starv 2 deth stop makking fun uv my tippign u meen ppl how u lik it if i mak fun uv ur tipping this is eesyr to tip becuz its short an u can still red it jus fine" is more the sort of post we want to discourage... ;)

Slightly :-offtopic but still grammar related, another thing that really bugs me is when people make a statement, but put question marks at the end of it. For example,

"I don't know who else ships besides Delta??"

Now, are you telling me you don't know who else ships besides Delta? If so, you need a period at the end of the sentence, not question marks. Or are you asking me if you don't know who else ships besides Delta? Well, I don't know, because I can't read your mind. Or are you asking me who else ships besides Delta? If so, you need an interrogative sentence structure, rather than a declarative sentence with question marks at the end.

Bless me, what DO they teach them at these schools.--Professor Digory Kirk, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe

I get your point, I have seen a few posts like that, usually they are ignored which to me is the best way to handle them. But I really do hate to see people who are new get a big wet blanket thrown on them when they come here to learn. If they come here to be trolls it usually doesn't take long for the members of this forum to ferret them out. There was a post a few days ago, the word mispelled was brumate, the poster got corrected right away before the question was even answered - that's the kind of thing that bugs me. Guess it's something I feel should be addressed through PM's rather than publicly. I have a family member who has some learning disabilities, he has been made fun of at school for it and he really has self-esteem issues, so maybe that's why I am more tolerant when it comes to bad spelling -No need to make people feel like idjits!

I understand your point, but there are 6,000+ members here, and there's no way they are all going to conform to your wishes or mine. If you are going to throw a misspelling out in front of 6,000 people (and I do realize that considerably fewer view regularly), you must accept the reality that someone might jump on it. If someone is too sensitive to accept a spelling correction, maybe a public forum isn't the place for them, or maybe they need to actually USE the spell check feature.

I remember the burmate/brumate example to which you refer. If I were the poster who misspelled it, I would appreciate being corrected, despite any perceived harshness in the correction. For some reason I spelled the word "dilemma" as "dilemna" until I got to college (I thought it was like the word "condemn"). When a college professor corrected me, I was extremely thankful. I cursed (mildly) the public school teachers who had never done so.

I thought it was dilemna too! & I have always been pretty good at spelling, I was a bookworm growing up. There is no way I'd expect everyone on this forum to agree with me -and if they did it'd be pretty boring. Just opining like everyone else :) Free speech is a beautiful thing

I love this thread!
Sorry I got in so late.
I don't use spellcheck as I am a reasonably good speller, but my typing is goshawful so I end up misspelling words when I type but rarely when I write.

And chatspeak makes my eyes bleed...
:sidestep:

I have had snakes a long time but always thought the word "brumate" was "bruminate".
So much for my igjetness!!
