Poor Brett the Butter-Stripe (Semi-graphic photos)

Early last week Brett was due to lay, but for over a day she had her first egg stuck at the vent. So I did a little bath and massage therapy, and she passed a HUGE, nasty slug with all of these horny projections on the ends, and four or five good-looking eggs. I left her alone for a day, but she ended up with another "egg-jam" at the vent. I repeated the bath and massage routine, but the eggs at the vent were turned about 45 degrees. By Friday I knew it was time to call my vet.

The vet jammed a speculum up there and with difficulty removed about six eggs. There were more in her, but the snake was exhausted and stressed, so we decided to see if she'd pass the others herself. But by Saturday, she was jammed up again. I did another round of bath and massage, but to no avail. So I took her back in yesterday, and Dr. Zyra (great name, btw, lol) removed the new egg-jam, and guided all of the remaining eggs out. There was a tiny bit of prolapsed tissue afterward, which she tucked back in. She cleaned the entire area (internal) and gave her a couple of sutures to keep everything in place. She also gave Brett an antibiotic shot. She gets the sutures out next week (when I take my rat-dog in for an appointment with her).

Brett's always been about the mellowest snake you could ask for, and even during all of these rough procedures, she never showed the least hint of aggression. It may sound corny (no pun intended), but I'm proud of her. I'm hoping the few eggs I got out of her initially hatch, and I'm hoping one is a female to replace her in breeding plans, because she's officially retired. I'd thought of giving her another shot next year, but Dr. Zyra said that she appeared to have unusually small openings from her oviducts into her cloaca. So she's done.

The guy I bought her from was actually on the list for her offspring, but he wanted one as a pet only. I may see if he wants her back as a definite non-breeder. If he doesn't want her, I'll probably keep her (even though it's against my evil breeder policies to keep a "pet only" snake). She did her best, and I'll pamper her for the rest of her life if it comes to that. I'm just happy that the vet said that she's relatively undamaged and that she should make a full recovery. :)

(For the record, the vet said that she seemed to have decent muscle-tone and that she didn't appear to be overweight.)

Oh poor girl. Still so beautiful though!
I know that whether you keep her or not, Brett will have a great pet-only life.
HUGS to both of you!

Sorry about your little girl Dean. I am glad that she will be alright. Hopefully you can find her a nice *pet* home. She is a very beautiful girl. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you get a couple girls out of the few eggs you got from her. :)

Aw, poor baby!! Isn't it amazing that the vet could even _see_ the openings from her oviducts? Can you imagine how small that is? I'm sorry she and you had to go through that. You're lucky to have a vet that could handle it. Does a snake speculum look like a human speculum??? How big is it?

Sorry to hear that Brett had to go back to the vet. She (& you) has had to go through a lot. The great news is that she is okay and should mend well.:)
Will keep my fingers crossed that the initial, good looking, eggs hatch out some beautiful little babies (with at least one female).

Thanks Beth, Katie, Becky, and Deb. She seems to be doing fine. :)

Thanks Nanci. I only found this vet VERY recently, and she's GREAT! A real find. I was so thrilled with her (and so unthrilled with my current dog vet) that I'm switching Vader to her. And she's only 15 minutes away from me!

I have to admit that I have no idea what a human speculum looks like! It was basically two hinged, opposing, blunt-cornered triangles on a handle. There was a little light between the triangles. The triangles were probably 1.25" per side. At one point she used hemostats too.

That is disappointing Dean. We hope for big piles of white but don't always get them. Hope the few eggs you got are ok.

Poor Brett, those stitches do look painful and slightly swollen, although I suppose I would be slightly swollen too :)

Glad to hear that she's okay and I can understand why you would decide to officially retire her. Got my fingers crossed that those eggs are all females as pretty as their mother :)

Oh my, she does look rather sore and swollen :(

Seems like you got a pretty good vet there and I hope Brett recovers well, with no lasting problems :)

You must have been going through hell at the weekend, but there you were giving ME loads of help, so I thank you for that ;)

Best wishes to you and for a good recovery for Brett :)

I'm so sorry for what you guys have been through! It sounds like you found an amazing vet and close by too!

Sounds like the snake speculum is a variation on a human speculum!

Thanks folks.

Thanks Sue. I was glad to be of help to you. :) Maybe some people around here who think I'm just a malicious jerk will gain some understanding from your comment. ;)

Aww poor Gal, and poor you, we know you're not souless.
How long do you expect it'll take for the swelling to go down? Poor thing is so swollen it almost looks like she's full of egg back there.

Thanks folks.

The thing is, some people don't realise that you have a LIFE outside of this forum.

You probably have a job to go to (unless you won the lottery ;) ), a home to run, special people in your life to tend to, animals to care for, other hobbies/interests to pursue and still you find the time to come on here and participate, as well as moderate :shrugs:

I think you and the other Mods do a great job, and those people that think you don't, should try putting themselves in your shoes, I bet there's very few of them that would fit :)

Wow! Sorry to hear she had to go through so much. She was in very good care with you. I hope the eggs are fine and you will be able to keep one of them and raise it up. After what she has been through she deserves nothing less then for you to keep her and pamper her. I just really hope I never have to endure an ordeal like that.
Jay

Oh my... poor, poor girlie. I remember when my sister had her first kid, and had to be "re-sewn" after... I can only imagine how a snake preceives that experience. I hope she recovers and I'm happy she's going to have a nice relaxing retirement.
