positioning of thermometer.

iv bought one of those small round t-rex thermometers, i was wondering where is best to position it. iv got it actually on the floor in the viv right now, rather than sticking it to the side as i was thinkin this is probably going to give me the best reading of belly heat. any suggestions? :)

The floor is the best place to put it, as that is where the snake is going to be. If it is atached to the side the reading will be far off from what it really is on the ground.

well its currently reading around 82....but my thermostat is actually on full! surely i should be able to get it hotter than this if i wanted to? (i know that 82 is fine i dont want to put it higher than that of course)

FWIW, those are not very accurate thermometers. If there is one piece of equipment that you should not skimp on, it is the thermometer.

a thermometer like that might be ok for a general reading of gradient temp, but for belly heat, Gary is correct. This is the heat that your snake has constant contact with. You should know exactly what the temp readings are.

im not being funny, but i really dont fancy spending £20 + on a thermometer, it just seems rather pointless to me.

You can pick up a good digital thermometer with a probe for about $10 at a Walmart type store. They're relatively cheap and do a good job.

Yeah, I figured you didn't have them, but any store of that type should carry what you are looking for.

Not trying to pick a fight here, but if you aren't willing to spend money on a thermometer for your herps that will give you acurate temp readings, and settle for a cheap non-accurate version, then you are likely to end up with a burnt snake.

If you are going to keep a pet you need to be ready to spend almost any amount of dough to keep the animal healthy, happy and correctly. Which mean that if you have to spend 20 or more on a thermometer that will give you the most accurate reading, then that is what you should do.

well ok, its just i am pretty low on cash right now, iv just spent £100 on thermostat, thermometer, humity gauge, and various cage furnishings. i expect thats about $200 plus im in the process of learning to drive, buying a car insuring it. it gets very expensive. i dont really understand what types you guys are talking about, if you got any links to sites, or just examples (preferably in uk or with shipping to uk) of what is best that would be great. what type are the $10 thermometers from walmart type stores?

ok, don't know if the Bean Farm can ship to the UK, but something similar to this is what you want to look for.

web page and you are looking for the thermometer Taylor Thermometers #1450, which is the 5th product from the top.

What you do with this is place the thermometer in outdoor mode, and then place the probe inside the viv close to the heat source.

and just for reference, this one is only $14...or about 7 pounds I think.

For example...

I couldn't find anything for the specific thermometer that I have but this is very similar, except I don't see a probe. But it is just a basic indoor/outdoor thermometer with a probe on a cord that is several feet long. It has a min/max temp memory so you can see how low or high temps are getting. Make sure it is set on outdoor as this is what the probe is actually reading. Hope this helps!

I didn't mean it that way. I just always think it's funny when people post similar replies so closely together like that! :)

I agree. I have actually been involved with a thread where someone else and I posted less than a min apart, and said the exact same thing. was very bizarre. And, I mean that it was almost exactly word for word.

I actually read a thread where that had happened with the two posts being almost exactly identical. Might have been the one you wrote.

Very possible. I don't remember what the thread was about anymore as it was a while ago and I have posted too many things since then.

anyway, back to the topic. If you really want to get top of the line temp control, you should get a thermostat that has a temp probe. then you just have to set up the temp on the thermostat, and put the probe where you want it, and you will only have to check the heat periodically.
