Proud new owner of my first snake, a black corn snake

Humidity doesn't matter much, if you live in a humid area of the world, and when you heat your home in winter it doesn't lower the humidity significantly. But in some areas, like AZ, where I live, humidity in the cold season is a problem. If you have less than 30% huimidity in your vivs, your snake is going to be stressed to some degree. That's my personal opinion, of course, not necessarily the opinion of all.

TC :sidestep:

I live in Houston, and I can tell you that heating and cooling a home significantly reduces humidity. In the summer we see humidity over 80 %, yet inside the homes it is below 50 %. If it wasn't lower, we would have a serious mold problem. So just living in a humid area doesn't guarantee high humidity in our vivs.

I had the same problem with the humidity level when I first got my corn. The hygrometer didn't read above 11% for about a week. So I did a little research and I picked up some Eco-Earth Loose Coconut Substrate. It did the trick. As soon as I took my Aspen out and put the Eco-Earth in the viv the humidity shot right up to about 30-40% which I think is right about perfect. My local PetSmart doesn't sell it but I have heard of the PetSmarts selling it. My local reptile shop does sell it and the price isnt that bad at all. It also makes spot cleaning a breeze. Here is a link so you know what your looking for.
