Question about Repti-Temp Rheostats

The plastic strip thermometers are not even near accurate enough for the safety of you snake(s). Spend the extra $6 and know what your temps are. :)

I forgot to add in my previous post: The aspen bedding also 'insulates' on top of the glass, so the temperature is going to be pretty darn accurate for you. I generally put my probe a few 'pieces of aspen' above the glass. I sprinkle some down, place the probe, and cover with the rest. If you know what I mean.

Ah, in the aspen...I haven't played with mine yet, but wouldn't it have to be taped down so it doesn't go down too far (assuming it's not so short that it doesn't reach in the first place, heh)? Also, I think I'll have to tape it around the entry point as I already have duct tape along there...gah, this is all so messy.
 
If you are talking about the strip thermometers that look like they are a piece of tape, spend the extra money and get the digital because those stick on thermometers are not very accurate.
 
Myself, I've now got three, I think...heh. I have the digital probe on the rheostat, but I won't get an actual number from that--just the range of oranges. Then I have a stick-on (round, not tape) thermometer, and I have a digital meat thermometer. Never in my life have I been so obsessive over the temperature. Around these parts, it's either "really hot" or "hot as Hades." :D
 
I just want to make sure I am looking at the right digital thermometer. The one I see has a probe, the probe has sticky tape that attaches to the glass. Is this the right one or are you guys using one that doesn't stick at all?
 
I use Accu-Rite brand thermometers from Wal-mart. Depending on the model, some have round probes with no sticky, others have flat probes with sticky. I never stick mine down. It makes for easier cleaning if you can just move the probe out of the way. I place the probe directly on the glass. If it is the round one, lay it down all the way on the glass.

It doesn't have to be rocket science. Keep it simple.
 
I picked up both kinds, a digital and a plastic strip. I will test them both and report my results later tonight. If the strip doesn't work well I am only out $1.50 but I'm willing to bet they both come out about the same, give or take a degree
 
I see what is going on. I guess I had to see for myself as I didn't understand what the people here were saying exactly. The temp stripes have a 5 degree jump and you have to tell what the temp is by color and that can be a guess. The strips also take longer to adjust to the temps changing. The digital temp changes temps in a matter of seconds and tell's you exactly what the temp is without guessing.

In the long run the digital is easier but when given enough time to adjust the strips are accurate give or take a degree and a good guess on what the colors mean.

A guess. I say it is 95 Degree's but it could be a degree off give or take. When looking at the digital and the strip you can guess where the strip temp is. It does show where the temp is around so you probably will be a degree off or so. Maybe a guess isn't accurate but it seems to be close enough but for a few more bucks I'll keep the digital and leave the guess working alone.
 
(Below) Set on the very low side the temp holds at 85.F when using Cobra Heat mats.
