Question about snakes drinking tap water?

Kotone

i (heart) ______.
Well, in the FAQ I saw that tap water should be dechlorinated for the snakes to drink. Is this true? I haven't seen anyone talk about this other than the FAQ, so I was just wondering if most people did this or not.

I've been worried that she hasn't been drinking cause I've never seen her do it, but she may do it when I'm not looking...I'm just wondering if the chlorine would make her not want to drink it.

I have some drops for my fishes water that "makes tap water safe for fish" but I don't know if it would be harmful to snakes or not...any thoughts/advice/opinions?

Thanks very much.

I've heard that bottled water will do better than tap water. I just got my corn and simply measured out enough to fill the water bowl in a measuring cup, then added two drops of Zoo Med Reptisafe to it. It is supposed to work the same way your drops do for your fish but for reptiles. It will instantly remove Chlorine. You can get it at any Pet Smart or Pet Co. Local pet shop should carry it. With just needing two drops each time you change the water a small bottle will last you a long time.

It's not a commom thing to see you snake drink. so don't worry about that. But if you have "city" water (treated), you might want to give your snake bottle water.
This question is a some do and some don't case.

Good Luck

This is a really good question. I've never heard of dechlorinating the water for reptiles, though. I've never done it, and my snakes are all healthy. It's probably better if you do dechlorinate them, though.

It's probably just easier to use tap water, though. Get Aquafina or something and drink most of it yourself, and keep one for the snake. :)

And don't worry about not seeing your snake drink. I rarely see my snakes drink. Only if I'm reaaaaally lucky.

If you are worried about chlorine in the water all you have to do is leave it exposed to the air for awhile(over night) and the chlorine will go into the air. And, there is not enough chlorine in drinking water to hurt a snake or you.

I use filtered water for my snakes, as well as my mouse/rat colonies (and also the dog and bird). Is it necessary--probably not; is it better to be safe than sorry--I think so; should we do all that we can to provide the healthiest environment--absolutely (if it is within our means)

I would be careful about saying that. Maybe not a human, because of their weight. But a 5 gram hatchling-- some city's doses of chlorine are relatively high and could be potentially harmful. So again, I would be careful about making that statement.

I use a Pur filter, but I also let the tap water sit for at least 12 hours before I run it through the Pur pitcher. I quit smoking three years ago and discovered that our local tap water tastes AWFUL, as well as noticably chlorinated. I got used to keeping a gallon jug on the counter, letting it dechlorinate before I made coffee or tea with it. Letting it dechlorinate and then filtering it may not make much difference to the snakes, but I feel better about what I'm giving them.

I use bottled water as well. I see my corn drink all the time...usually after I handle her as I am putting her back in her viv I put her in right over her water bowl and she will drink while still clinging to my hand. It's funny to see her "cheeks" move in and out while she drinks :crazy02: .

My county where I used to live used chloramines to purify the public drinking water. Chloramines are fatal to fish and reptiles so I always used purified water. The water here out of my well is absolutely sweet and pure so I use it for my snakes no problem.

Thanks for all the info guys. ^^

I'll see if I can't find some of those drops...If I can't I'll just stick to bottled water.

I use bottled water but is distilled as opposed to spring. As I understand it, distilled is better than spring water.

I'm not sure if this is exactly true. Distilled is completely pure water, but that might not be beneficial to your snake. There are no naturally occurring minerals in the distilled water. I would think spring water would be better suited for these purposes.

I know that when I use RO (reverse osmosis) water for my fish tanks, I have to add in minerals for the fish. The RO process not only takes out the "bad" stuff, but the "good" as well.

OK, now I'm worried that the distilled water is doing my "baby" harm. Does anybody know if distilled water is detrimental to corn snakes? :shrugs:

I used water from my reverse osmosis filter which makes it 99% pure and all my snakes are still healthy, happy, and BIG! So I don't think it's going to kill them. They've been on it for almost 4 years. Now that I'm on a clean well here in SC, I'm giving them water out of the tap for the fist time.

It won't hurt you snake, your snake isn't getting any nurtients it may/may not need. If your snake gets all of its nutrients from mice, its not a problem at all. I don't have a clue about where all of the nutrients come from, though.
