Revolution or Invermectin

In a previous thread I mentioned that at the pet store I work at we have successfully used both ivermectin paste (Farm & Fleet carries it in the horse meds aisle) or Revolution topical (from your vet; it's expensive). Both have proven safe when administered properly.
 
I have personally used revolution and would highly recommend it. I regularly use revolution on my birds as well.

I posted this post on ivermectin in another thread, which might help. Remember ivermectin does not work against fleas!

More probably, it's mites or lice. Lice, you can see - check over the flanks and back of the rats, brushing the fur back. You're looking for little red things that move. Not a great photo, but here is a photo of a rat with a severe louse infection. All the little red dots are the lice, if that gives an idea of scale.

If the rat has mites, then it'll be itchy, and mainly scabby over the face and chin. You can't see the mites, only the itching.

The other main cause of itching is bedding (wood shavings or other similar dusty substances), and diet (excess fat in the diet will make them itchy).
