regurgitation

hey agian, so last feeding (5 days ago) i fed Candy 2/3 of a mouse. She ate it no problems, no regurge afterwards. Today i went to do the same thing and give her 2/3. She won't eat it. I tried with and without nutribac. She is in a contaner with a towel on top right now with the 2 peices of pink with nutribac on them. How long should i give her to eat them she doesn't seem interrested at all. thx.

Okay, don't panic. Is she maybe getting ready to shed? Maybe too early and you can't tell? Did you see my thread about Razzle that just got updated? He did that to me too! It's so scary when they have been eating small meals to begin with! I bet that's it, though. Had she been hiding, maybe even just the previous day?

I would do this: Give her her mouse (pieces), leave her for an hour. If she hasn't eaten, reheat, leave her an hour. (Yes, I know it's icky to reheat pieces)! Since she's normally a _good_ feeder, I'd just quit and try again in five days. (If she was a non-feeder, I'd reheat again and leave her overnight with it. Since she's a reliable feeder, she just doesn't want to eat right now).

And since she has a history of regurge, if you even suspect she is blue, I'd just quit. I would never feed her when she is blue. Maybe as an adult. If she will even eat. Plenty of mine will skip one or two meals when they are blue. Just offer again in five days, or if you confirm that she is blue, after she sheds. The same evening is okay.

Hey Nanci you've been alot of help thx. I got her about 6-8 weeks ago and she still hasn't shed so that could be it. I was told that amels are hard to tell if they are sheding so i'm not sure how to tell (she still looks normal to me but this is my first snake). I just read your thread and it gave me a bit of hope. Do you think i should wait since she might be sheding. What is a good way to tell if she is sheding? Her eys still look normal. Thx agian.

At some point, she will look pink instead of red or orange. But- if she won't eat, she won't eat. Meaning, for whatever reason she refuses the meal, you can't _make her_ eat. What has her activity level been like? Normal, or have you not seen her when you would expect to? I can't tell you how many entries I have in my feeding software where one week, the snake has refused, and the next week, I have either noted they are blue or they have shed. It's just against their instincts to be out eating when they are supposed to be hiding, because they can't see.

She hasn't been crusing her viv since i fed her last. She still comes out and everything but she goes in the plants and sleeps (where she is right now).
Here's a pic of her and where she has been hidding. As you can see she is prety hidden. Sorry for the blurry pic my camera sucks.

I had 2 of my snakes who regurged their first yr of life. Boy did I worry A LOT! This is what I would do & have done. Don't feed again right now. Let her digest what you just gave her. Try again in 5-7 days w/Nutribac. (I used this til they were a yr old) I would also make a home-made wethide. Nancy has a great cheap & easy one that these snakes LOVE! You make it out of a small plastic glad bowl that has a lid & put damp moss in it. Cut a hole for her to come in & out of. Keep it on the opposite side of the viv. away from the heater. (this is where I keep mine) She will go in when its time to shed. My guys all love it & I keep one in ALL the time.
Again like Nancy said she will get Pink looking (like her skin is faded in color) & then she will shed.
Its so hard not to worry. You just have to leave her alone & let her settle in. Before you know it you will know when she is about to shed & she will be eating like a champ. Promise!
Good luck & get to work on that wethide! You won't be disappointed..I will try & find that thread on how to make it & post it here.

ok thx i'll put a wethide in just in case. her eyes aren't clouded over yet and her colors havn't faded yet either but this would be my first ever shed i experience so i'll keep a close look at her so that i know for next time. thx for the help and for the link.

My snake had a regurge last month. She is a yearling so I went back one pinkie per feeding. Lucky for her she went and shed during the ten day fast. Now I can tell she is ready to bump up to two pinks. She starts hunting again the day after her feeding.

Their personalities change when the start to shed. They become more primal and reclusive. My snake never uses any of the damp hides I put in. I just keep misting the tank and put plastic wrap over the lid. I hope your little girl pulls through the way mine seems too.

hey, so yesterday i feed her 2/3 of a mouse (in 2 pieces). She didn't eat it right away so i put a towel over her feeding bin and she ate one half. I reheated up the second piece and i left her in her feeding bin with it and she didn't eat the second piece. I'm happy that she at least ate one of the pieces but i don't know why she didn't eat the whole thing. She isn't using the wethide and she doesn't look like she is sheding so i don't know what's up. I hope she's ok.

If you're feeding two items (even parts of mouse) I've found that you need to offer them both at once if you have a picky feeder. Once they've finished swallowing one item, they can go into "digestion mode" and not be interested in something offered afterwards.

At the next feed, try putting both bits in at once.

Well, she's getting calories in- that's the important part. Let's try (in five days if she isn't shedding) the same two pieces, and if she only eats one again, then you're going to have to go to deep slitting. You get whatever portion you need, say 2/3 of a pink, and after thawing, cut almost but not quite all the way through so the two parts are still joined. You can even do this with a whole pink deep-slit twice to make it like 3/3.

It's a lot easier, with a snake that won't eat multiple pieces (which is pretty rare) if they will eat out of your hand, then you can just "chain feed" the next piece- get it started into her mouth by pushing it against the end of the piece she is already swallowing. Once the first piece is in, it will be swallowed separately, and she'll have committed to the second piece!

When i fed her i did put both pieces in at the same time. Now for the slitting, do you mean like cut it in pieces but not all the way so that it is still together? And should i do that next feeding or the one after if she doesn't eat both? And one more thing. I ordered an indoor/outdoor themometer and i finaly got it today, i checked my temps today i found my temps way to high (around 91, i had a stick on themometer and i just realized that that was a bad idea). I fixed the temps to about 85 on the hot side. Could the high temps have caused her not to eat? One more thing i also have a heat lamp, I don't know what to do with it anymore. Should i use it and turn the heat down on that too? I'm not sure what to do. Thx for all the help again. I apreciate it.

I would just put away the heat lamp and maybe some day get a lizard! To me, it's just a fire hazard. If you don't have an animal that _requires_ a lamp, why take the risk.

You could feed either way. I _do_ mean cut almost all the way through- maybe 2/3 to 3/4 through. I don't think it matters. I know you are anxious to get food into her, so maybe try that a couple times, then offer two pieces or three pieces again, and if she only eats one, then she's just told you she really doesn't care for more than one item at a time, so you can just continue on, cutting amost but not quite all the way through.

Ok i put the heat lamp away and i will try slitting. Now i'm not sure if i should feed her 2/3 again since she didn't eat all of it last time or go to a full pink. Fallowing the protocal she only had one meal of 2/3 and then after she ate 1/3 so i'm prety sure she should get another 2/3 then maybe move up to a full pink is that ok? or should i try doing the next 2 meals at 2/3? Thx alot Nanci, you've been the reason why i'm not panicing lol.

I'd say try the 2/3. If you go too fast, and she regurges again, that will be a huge step back.

Ok sounds good. The last thing i want is another regurge cuz that could be the end of her if that happends. I'll feed her 2/3 for the next 2 meals then go up from there and we should be good. I'll be sure to update you on what is going on. Her next feeding is on tuesday. Thx again.

Ok so now i'm worried. Now i'm sure i have all the right temps and set up. I went to feed Candy today and i slit the 2/3 pink almost all the way through. I put her in her feeding bin with the pink and she doesn't seem to be interested. I rewarmed it up and still nothing. I don't know what to do anymore and i'm worried about her and i don't know what is wrong.
