Rescued Bunny

I went to the pet store yesterday to get crickets and while I was there I started talking to the lady who works there. She asked if I had seen the bunny some one dropped off. I said no so she brought me in the back and there was this little bunny in a 10 gallon tank. It had an extreme head tilt, to the point that her head was almost upside down. I picked her up and as soon as I did I knew I wasn't leaving her there. The lady said she has a perment tilt but she hasn't even been treated. I said I would take her so they gave her to me. I'm pretty sure that the bunny was onw of the ones they were selling there and not one that was dropped off.

A friend of mine knows a good bunny vet so I'm taking her to see the vet. I have hope she will get better. She eats her hay, greens and pellets, with a little help and takes water from a syringe but can't walk, she ends up rolling.

Here are pictures of the poor girl. We named her Tilly.

Oh my goodness poor thing, she's lucky someone with a kind heart like you found her and is willing to care for her.

Yea I really didn't want another rabbit (I have 2 already) but I couldn't leave her there it would have haunted me. She needed medical care and they were just going to leave her there, she would have eventually died. She is the sweetest bunny too.

Oh my gosh, I've never seen anything like that before. I'm glad someone caring like you found her!

Oh my gosh, I've never seen anything like that before.

It is called Torticollis. Also referred to as "Head Tilt" &/or "Wryneck". Multiple things could cause it.

Katie, Kudos for rescuing the bunny. She is very cute. I hope that the cause, of her "Head tilt", will be something treatable.

;_; Poor bunny! I hope she can be treated. While not as severe, we had a cat once at my work who had a head tilt of about 80 to 90 degrees. Her name was Eileen... or more appropriately spelled "I-lean"

Oh my goodness!! Best wishes for that sweet little thing to make a recovery. Do you think s/he will be able to regain any kind of normalcy regarding its head? It seems like it would be impossible to walk/hop around like that!!

I'm pretty sure it was caused by an ear infection and not a stroke but a parasite could also be a possibility. I'm hoping that she will get better because if she doesn't I will have to put her to sleep but I have hope.

My last dog had "doggy vertigo" and had a head tilt, she got better with treatment but always had a little tilt.

I think she will. She may have a permanent head tilt but after treatment it shouldn't be as bad and she should be able to get around. Right now she cannot be left without support or she will flip and roll. It's really sad to watch.

Keep us updated about this poor bun, please? It's just heartbreaking to see it in its current condition, and I'm hoping for some good news saying that its condition is treatable.

I've seen bunnies like this from ear infections left untreated. The infection can get better but the tilt is usually there to stay. It pisses me off that people would let it go and get that bad!

I also have a rabbit (American Chinchilla rabbit) and I know how you feel. I would have taken the poor baby too. I hope he gets better and be able to walk and run and hop around like a normal little bunny.

You are the best person. Seriously. I really admire the compassion you have for animals.

I will be keeping my fingers crossed for your bunny. She is so beautiful.

Thanks everyone, she is eating and drinking a little better but still rolling. The vet can't see her till Sunday but she is sending meds to me on Thursday.

Oh wow! Worst case of head tilt I've seen...but I've only seen a few pictures. So what did the vet say?

Turns out the head tilt was caused by an ear infection, which is good cause that is treatable. The vet cleaned her ear out and gave me banana flavored Baytril and Metacam to give her. We are waiting for another medicine to give to her also but it was back ordered. The vet believes the Baytril alone will clear up the infection and I do too because I had her on 3ml of Baytril for the past week and she was improving, now she is on 6ml twice a day.

Do you know if the infection was going on too long or not? I know that if it's not been treated for a long time the head tilt can become permanent. Do you know if your little bunny's is temporary or not?
