Runt Update

Thought I'd give everybody updates on the 2g runts I got from Jenn (Shed'n My Skin).

Mica (Ghost Motley-Stripe) still hasn't shed, but soaking and the occasional bit of olive oil keeps him from getting all tight/wrinkly. He will eat a mouse tail if I put it in his mouth, otherwise he ignores it. I'm hoping I can get him to eat more then a mouse tail soon. I'm going to try a pinky head again on his next feeding day and see if he will eat it. Last time I tried it, I put it in his mouth and he tried to swallow it, but he was in bad need of a soak and the skin on his neck didn't want to expand. I'll give him a soak before hand to see if it helps. My goal is to get him to grow enough and see if he'll shed properly on the 2nd try. I'm not ready to give up on him yet and he doesn't seem ready to either.

Eos (Hypo) had her first shed during the night of 19th/20th. She didn't want anything to do with a pinky head or any other part. I let her wait a few days. Got a pink head and made it really hot and tucked in in her hide with it. This morning, no head and a very tiny snake with a VERY large lump in her tummy. Poor thing looks like she swallowed a watermelon.

Good to hear they are still hanging in there. The clutch with the hypo are eager eaters compared with the other, nine of them ate on my first try.

Heroic! Would there be any chance of taking pics of them without disturbing them so much that it stresses them beyond saving? It would be interesting to see what you're working with... esp. for those of us who haven't seen a "runt" or a snake so small that the head of a pinky looks like a watermelon in its stomach. LOL.

I hope you can get them to eat regularly and be saved.

It's cool that you're taking the time and energy to work with the little ones. I hope they cooperate with your efforts!

Thanks everyone..

The little hypo has AMAZING metabolism. I came home last night (she ate sometime Friday night) to her cruising around her viv without much of a bump. My first though was OH POO...she regurged. Started hunting for it and all I found was a poo. I think she digested it already.

Now if I could just get more calories down Mica I would be happy.

He'll swallow a tail if I put it in his mouth, but I really don't think he's getting enough nutrition from it. He's starting to look thin and is considerably weaker then the hypo.

I just tried egg yoke as suggested in another thread and all we got was a big mess and he got to have another bath. I think the syringe tip is too big. Anybody have an ideas/suggestions on something else to try. I'm starting to lose hope on him.

will he strike at a pinky if you tease him?
I remember getting one runt to eat that way last year. I cut off the body once it latched onto the head.
Lizard scenting...
Or try a "drumstick" - a leg from a fuzzy
Anyway thanks for trying so hard with him. I will understand if you decide putting him down is the best option.

He won't strike. Tried that. He just had a soak and was constipated. We got that dealt with. I'm going to try a head again tonight, but he didn't want anything to do with the last one. I'll try a leg as well, but I'm not sure that it's going to have anymore calories then a tail.

I've tried chicken scenting and that didn't work. Live is obviously out since I can't get mice that small. I don't think I can find lizards small enough either.

Is it possible to try to scent a pink head with anole? I know my local pet stores sell anoles for about $7 each. You can rub the pink on it to scent.

I wish you luck with this stubborn lil guy!

I'll probably try that next. I haven't seen Anoles around here lately though.

So far he's ignoring the head. I haven't given up on him yet, but I'm running out of time. 2g at hatch doesn't give me much reserves to go through before it's too late. The tails help, but he's not getting enough from them to keep his weight up. I haven't weighed him in the last couple of weeks, but he's definitely looking thinner. I need a way to get serious calories down him with out drowning him.

I can send you a feeding tube if you want to try to get anything down him. I used this method to put Nutribac directly into Jasper's stomach when he regurged. It's a 5fr- very tiny and soft.

I looked at non- and problem feeders at Jeff Mohr's table, but just wasn't brave enough to try, even the problem feeders.

Thank you every one for the support and advise. Sadly, I found Mica dead this morning. My gut tells me that something just wasn't right with him from the beginning. And that even heroic efforts wouldn't have only prolonged things.

RIP little one.

Shannon I'm sorry for the loss of Mica. You did the best you could do and that's what really counts. :(

On the other hand-I'm glad to hear Eos ate for you. Good luck and I hope all turns out well with that one. :)
