Safe to feed on paper towel?

Shep151

Too busy to hang out.
Yeah, that's what I thought, too. This is what a 100 gram colombian looks like after swallowing a whole paper towel with his rat.

I'd really like to put this in the husbandry section, but it's not a corn, so :shrugs:

To add insult to injury: Yup.
I'm hoping Dr. Alan will be able to reassure me that there's some hope that the vet will be able to do something. We'll see.

Not my intention at all, Zach. It just looked similar to the one you had posted pics for Jen on AHR that's all.

I hope everything goes well for you and this little guy!

Oh, it wasn't taken that way, Pat! It just sucks all the more when you're happy to see a cool one going to a buddy, and then something crappy happens. I'd rather lose a keeper than lose one that's promised to a friend.
Thanks for the well-wishes!

Safe to feed on paper towel? YUP
Safe to leave them with the same paper towel after that? Nope:)

It makes you wonder, at this point would trying to induce a regurge actually help or hurt the situation. I sure hope everything goes OK with this one. I have had a similar thing happen here, but with a much larger snake and a smaller peice of paper towel. That turned out OK. It kind of makes me wonder about the people who are SURE there is no risk in housing their corns together. I have had corns that will eat ANYTHING that had mouse scent on it.

I have a hatchling in the freezer from two years ago that turned around, latched onto itself (obviously couldn't let go), and killed himself with a nice fresh pinky in its belly. :shrugs:

It's amazing what we herpers keep in our freezer eh? You know it's kind of funny. Right before I left on my trip, I realized that the order of all the frozen cookie dough my son just sold for a school fundraiser was to come in while I was gone. I left a note for my mom (who was babysitting all the "other" animals) to pick it up for me. I was so busy trying to pack, I didn't even think of the adventure the poor woman would have to go on to find space for all that cookie dough in my freezer.

Needless to say, I believe she is emotionally scarred and will never again eat anything from my freezer.

LOL...good thing that the people who ordered the cookie dough don't know what's in your freezer!

Yeah, we've had one here grab rat and paper towel together and start to eat. It was a bit of a chore getting her to release, but luckily we were watching her. I don't feed on paper towels anymore. Mostly I feed in delis or gladware, but if I feed in the viv, I've taken to feeding on paper plates or quarters or halves of paper plates.

Hopefully I'll never see this...

Update...

Contacted the vet yesterday, and to my surprise, they said it was "not uncommon". (Funny how I've never seen anyone post about it before, and have always heard how safe it is to feed on paper towels or newspaper.)
The vet said to give 5 or 6 drops of mineral oil daily for 3 days, and it should break down and pass.
What he didn't mention, (and I didn't think to ask) was the possibility of rectal prolapse. I've seen this in several young boas in pet stores. Other than the mineral oil, I guess there's nothing I can do but hope he expels ONLY the stuff that should be expelled.
So, he's had his first dose of mineral oil, (and he enjoyed that about as much as I would have, I think!) so we're back to "sit and wait".

Good luck , Zach. Hope he'll be okay. I had a king constrict a mouse so hard, he had the paper towel and the mouse tight in his coils. Fortunately I was able to pull the towel out using hemostats once he relaxed his grip.Best of luck
