Sailor: Thoroughbred Progression

I finally remembered to take my camera out to the farm to get some new photos of Sailor. These were taken on January 29th.

Since bringing her home, she's been getting a mix of our sweet grain/whole oat/crimped oat mix (about 12% protein) and shredded beet pulp. 2nd crop hay has also been added to her normal hay ration. She has also been wearing a nice warm turnout blanket (bonus: it is pretty pink argyle!! I love argyle...) so that she can use as much of the energy from her grain and hay as she can to put on weight, instead of using it to keep warm. So far, so good!! :)

It isn't as obvious in the pictures as it is in person, but she's put on a lot of weight (without putting it on too quickly and causing fat pockets...she's actually maintained a nice amount of muscle definition) in the last 2 1/2 months.

Overall shot...I can't wait to put this body to work, she is so well put together!! She's definitely got an event horse body (which is the plan for her, as long as she has the 'brain' and 'heart' to do it)!

Sorry about the dirty looking floor, we had just thrown down hay and were in the process of doing stalls...we hadn't swept yet. (We generally keep the barn very VERY clean, as I have a pony with heaves and she can't be exposed to much dust and hay chaff.)

Her bum's looking lovely, there are definately going to be nice muscles there as she fills out! How is she with groundwork?

She is an absolute brat, unless I'm around (my dad won't even handle her because he's scared of her). I have a feeling that she is going to be very similar to my boy Nick...he is a complete arse when he doesn't get out to be worked and doesn't get pasture time. That is, of course, unless I'm handling him, then he's a sweetie.

Because of the weather we've been having, she's been stuck inside most of the winter and we have nowhere to do any training (we were supposed to be taking the thoroughbreds and the other competition horses to an indoor facility this winter, but plans fell through) until spring. The little bit of work I did with her last fall was wonderful, she's very alert and attentive. She's also very curious, which should lead to a brave event mare. I hope she'll be very easy to train, and her attitude while working with her seems to indicate that she will be. :)

Whoops! Sounds like a challenge or two ahead! Kim got me the Kelly Marks book, 'Perfect Manners' for my birthday, which is lovely, but we both fell about laughing when we realised that I do most things with Merlin totally wrong, but he's such a dote he lets me get away with it. (Merlin's been very naughty, tying to bite people, but just gently groomed my hair and shoulders before Kim had the chance to warn me!)

Hallie, she's so beautiful!!! She's really changing since you first got her!

My step-father taught me to always bet on the horse with the nicest bum. That advice has worked for me many many times.

Yeah, it should be a fun challenge though!

Hmm, never heard of that book, I'll have to check it out!

Thanks Lori!! And yep, that's the 'powerhouse'...always pick the nice butts!

She must feel like she's gone to heaven!!

I'm sure she does. She is so spoiled (just like the rest of them). :)

She's looking awesome! Her butt is really filling in nicely, as well as her neck. She's in very good hands! :}

Great news!! Sailor had her first post-track ride about a week ago. My little sister's best friend (she's been around since they were 4, so she's practically my little sister as well) Laura had the pleasure of trying her out first. She was FABULOUS!!!!

I started out by throwing her on the longe line for about 15 minutes to get any bucks out of her system...uneventful...she was an angel. So, Laura looked at me and goes, 'Eh, let's go for it' and leads her to the mounting block.

Sailor stood like a champ while Laura got on and then walked off like a pro. :) She did have a few 'mare' moments, but then I reminded Laura that she needs constant challenges and had her walk and trot her over ground rails and tiny little crossrails. That did the trick, she didn't misbehave the rest of the ride. I was so proud of her!! Laura walked, trotted, and cantered her...she has such lovely gaits...she's going to be a dream to train. :D

So, pictures!!!!!

What Katie said! Sailor is so beautiful. I'm happy she's going to be easy for you to train! :D

She looks like she has nice movement. Congrats on rescuing a great life-long pal.

She does, thank you!! One of, if not the nicest in our barn, and that really is saying something...we have eventers and dressage horses (a few warmbloods, one other rescued thoroughbred, and an Appendix Quarter Horse with exceptional gaits). I'm hoping that she will easily make it to Intermediate or higher level eventing (with my sister aboard, I don't have the guts for that anymore...I'll take her through Training or maybe Preliminary).
