selling baby corn snakes

Chip's thread is definitely a good one to read through. I bred one pair of my snakes last year and I really enjoyed it. However, I still have two babies left (not including the three that I kept) that I still have to feed and house that I haven't been able to find homes for yet. So I've decided not to breed again this year because I don't want to get in over my head.

Speaking of being "lost", are you prepared for what you will need to do if your girl lays eggs? Do you know what is needed to have a good chance of hatching them?

How about if you are successful in hatching out the babies? What are you going to do then? Got a source of pinky (baby) mice lined up? Sounds like you have a big girl. What are you going to do if you hatch out 30 babies?

Sounds to me that you have a whole bunch of learning to do REAL QUICKLY. To be honest, you should have been asking questions long BEFORE thinking about doing the breeding step. I think you've got a lot of catching up to do. There are sections on this site that I recommend you spend a lot of time reading.

Good luck!

I totally agree, what if all you get are Normals (VERY likely) which sell for $5-10, you are going to be holding a whole lot of babies that are not sought after as much as some of the newer morphs. You will have to find them ALL homes, and if it is a big clutch it could be 30 babies or so that you need to feed, water, change bedding, and other expenses that may not even be covered with the sales you do get, and even then you may never sell out your whole collection and what you sold their siblings for will run dry quickly in feeding the leftover babies.

Like Olivia said above, she still has 2 that she doesn't want to keep (even thought they ARE gorgeous!) and is still paying for their needs and will until the right buyer comes along.

A little reading/research goes a long way in this situation.

Here in the UK babies seem to sell for between £15 to £40 , I'm not really doing for the money , so even if I sell them for £10 each I would be happy !

Who's being negative? People who have done it are simply telling you what to expect. Most people have no idea how much work and money it requires to produce and care for a clutch of babies, and how difficult they can be to get in good homes. Let alone for an amount of money that would offset your feeding and work. To me, looks like everyone is shooting straight with you. If you went to a dog forum and said you wanted to breed your companion dog, you would see real negativity.

It just seems like people keep saying the same thing all the time, I know I will need to find homes for them and I know it will cost me money most hobbies do ! Is that not what breeding is ? I know where I'm going to get pinkies from, I've setup an incubator, I've made a snake rack, we all have to start somewhere!

People in this hobby are generally very supportive of new breeders (especially compared to new breeders of other animals), but yes, we do want to make sure you know what you're getting in to, so some of the same things have been repeated. Ideally, it's best to research everything thoroughly before you attempt to breed your snakes and to learn a bit about the genetics.

It sounds like you have a reasonable understanding of the amount of money and time it will take, so feel free to ask any other questions along the way.

Thank you , its true the one thing I will have to look into properly is where I'm am going to sell them but there are plenty of websites I could try.

I'm not sure how popular Craigslist and ebayclassifieds (kijiji) are in the UK, but I would definitely try both of those websites for selling locally. And of course, you can use the classifieds on this website and over on faunaclassifieds.com.

Ebay is very big in the UK and so is gumtree , I know I still have alot to learn but I think I no the basics quite well.

Thank you for your help, I know I still have a lot to learn but I really want to give it ago, but I'm going to start with the basics and see how I go before I start trying different morphs.

No offense intended, we love people joining into the corn snake world, but we also are very protective of the hobby. Too many people breed them without knowing anything and then face the consequences, we all want to make sure you are as ready as your female is. There have been many posts by people that read like your first post did, but they REALLY have no idea what they are in for at all and get in over their heads real quick.

This is where I come into the hobby, I do "rescues", I take the ones that got too big and the owners don't want them any more, the ones the kids got bored with, the ones that cost too much to take care of, the ones someone is about to toss out into the desert because they didn't know they couldn't keep 10 corns in one tank together. I will never be a breeder, I am content doing my thing, and am so glad I came across this site. It also lets me live vicariously through the breeders and share in the joy and excitement while maintaining my part in it all.

You sound like you have the money and the room and the basic knowledge, please don't hesitate to ask any questions. That is what the group here is best for, good, solid advice but also honest advice. Listen to it and please know they want the best for the snakes.

I don't know about the UK, but here eBay doesn't allow you to sell live animals.

Oh, good. I also reread the post, eBay also has a classifieds sections where you can sell anything (pretty much!) because it is between the buyer and seller, eBay just posts the items.

Good luck to you, honestly, they are wonderful animals and I hope you become a great asset to the corn snake community.
