I have been breeding bloodreds to keys' corns for a couple of years now, but haven't yet produced an F2 to find out what combined look there might be.

Don,

Are all those great looking Rosy Bloodred photos on your site just the result of Booldred x Keys or are they the f1's of the resulting offspring of the Booldred x Keys breedings? Either way they are amazing. I am hoping to get a pair next year. I have to say that from the few Rosey Bloodred photos I have seen this Bloodred does not look at all like them.

A good friend was talking to me one day about 10-12 years ago and said he really loved his rosy rats. About six months later, I went to his house and was shocked when he opened the cages for them. Some of them were bloodreds, but the most beautiful gold and orange colors. He said a friend of his caught the grandparents of these snakes and they were pure locality rosy rats (key corns). He bred them together and got same. Next generation, some of these bloodreds came out and those were the ones he liked best. He didn't know what a bloodred was at that time.

SO . . . since I believe this friend is truthful AND given that these hail from one of the keys, they must be rosy rat bloods. However, I have only recently bred bloods to rosy rats so I don't yet know what the F2s will look like. I guess we'll find out next year if the newly created ones are like the ones I've had for years. I'll keep everyone posted.

Awesome. Definitely keep us update. Those rosy bloods you've got now are definitely some interesting snakes---it's very interesting to hear that they are in fact carrying the bloodred gene in them----makes it more so because they're wild caughts from a region that is quite a ways away from the original bloodred gene.

Speaking of which, have you crossed a bloodred into a rosy bloodred yet? I'd be curious to see those results to determine if those rosy bloods are in fact homo for bloodred or just outcrossed---and to see if it's in fact the same 'bloodred' gene. I'm sure you've done that test though.

They're all from F2s of wild caught key's corns. When I first got them, I asked a couple of big corn breeders if they're ever heard of bloodreds being found in the keys and either one or both of them responded that they had heard of some. Introduced there? Perhaps.

Yes, when I breed a rosy blood to a blood, I get all bloods. Pretty ones too. It really enhances the colors of the F2s. I've done this several times.
