Snake names

Karoni

Cornaholic
Hi all,

I adopted my second snake on Sunday! I am over the moon. :) He's a little amel motley (I think). I am looking forward to naming him once I get to know him better (I haven't gotten to play with him yet). I've noticed that so many of you have neat names for your snake(s). How did you come up with your name(s)? I know some of the names must be from other languages.

LOL...

Hi Karoni! Check out the advanced search for names threads and you'll find a few older ones...while you're waiting for this thread to fill up. ;)

Thanks! I almost always search for what I'm looking for before I post a thread, but it never occurred to me to search on this one. ;)

Bandit - he was black and slight grey so thought it was a suitable name.

Houdini - he would crawl out of the cage every time I opened it trying to escape.

Rosie - we just like the name for her.

Candy was red and white like a candy cane.

Casper - well just looked like a ghost.

Dorky - he has huge eyeballs and first thing I said when I saw him was he looked like a dork.

Albie - thought he was an albino when we got him and couldn't think of a name so just called him albie.

All the different sp. I keep all get their own naming themes. Snakes are named for drinks. As of now I have Curacao and Bailey. :)

decadence, I love some of your names. Especially Bandit. Lunar Gecko, what are your other naming schemes. That's so creative--I love it!

Ummm... I have a lot of sp so I wont name them all.

Gargoyle geckos - comets and solar names, example: Sola, Haley, Cosmo, Oberon
Cresteds - Anime names like Gaz and Grr
Mourning geckos - Pixi Jenx and Tink (fairy names)
Electric Blue geckos- Giga & Watt (electricity terms)
Tarantulas - cute names that so don't fit with a tarantula like Pumpkin and Fluffy
Leachies - classic literature names like "Dante"

Also know people that do name themes like Candy ie; Reese's, Snickers, skittles etc. Or Soda names Like Dr. Pepper, sprite, squirt... Or names from books, fruit/berry names, tv shows. That sort of stuff. :) Heres a name page you can look under themes. :)

I'm always interested to hear how other people pick their snake names too. BTW, I think Sienna is a great name!

For my snakes I usually pick names from Greek and Roman mythology. Pandora is my favorite snake name, and I've recycled it a few times. Also Minerva, Andromeda, Medusa, Elektra, Circe, Hephaestus, etc. I seem to always pick female names, and then the snakes turn out to be males.

I have never had any agenda or theme in naming my animals, be they dog, fish, snake, etc. It's always (and I mean always) the first name that just comes to me!

When we were driving home with my first CS the letter 'E' came to me...then I blurted out "Evie" (Eve...Snake...get it?).

The baby Corn we got in today was named 2 weeks ago! The name "Cassandra" just popped into my mind. I think it was based on Halloween and Elvira (who's real name is Cassandra).

I guess now that I think about it, I have a reason for why I name my animals what I name them, it's just that the reason comes to me after the name does...weird! LOL

I do names for my reptiles mostly on themes, makes it easier to name them.

My cornsnakes right now are on an Anne Rice characters theme - Lestat, Akasha, Marius, etc..

My black milks are taken from 7 deadly sins - Wrath, Envy

My geckos are taken from the literature of Tolkien - Eldar, Avari.

That said, I have had my green tree python for 11 months and still have not named it. But when I do it will probably be from the world of Tolkien as well.

My boas are named after characters from Buffy: Oz & Zander

Our corn is named Frank, our niece wanted to name him, so she did!

Thanks, Kronos. I was holding her, admiring her pretty reddish brown color, and Sienna popped into my mind. That's how I name my animals...whatever comes to me.

Jenber, my husband would love that; he's a big buffy fan.

I just name mine the first thing that pops into my head after seeing them. Sometimes I pre pick famous couple names lol

Here are just a few of mine: thor, gypsy, jax, oz, ms. cash, farrah, magnus, sugar, pixie, simpson, pookie, burkhart, heart, glanzend, morticia, gomez, bonnie, clyde, rain, lace, comet, kane, tonic, ginger, pumpkin, sparrow, willow, tootsie, eve, sybil, venus, yaffa, koko, kandi, rillie, risky, heinrich, diesel, irmina, drizzt, hannibal, valcor, tamsin, cosmo, kitty, lokki, trinity, gwyn, abel, babs, buster, alice, hansel, gretal, jasper, piper, iliza........and so forth lol That's just the ones I could think of off top of my head.

Zuko and Zula are named after characters from the Avatar the last airbender cartoons
Chedda - because her yellow and orange looks like cheese
Raya- because she is a sunglow motley, so like rays of the sun
Terra- because her color is kinda brownish orange like terra cotta clay pots
Zea- because Zea Maize is the botanical name for corn lol
Snowflake- because she is a snow corn
Reimei- japanese for twilight or breaking dawn either way
Tabasco- like the hot sauce because he is a bloodred
Neo- like Neapolitan
Cozmo- because our breeder name is cozmic cornz
Zafrina- for a character in the book Breaking Dawn
Midna- after the Twilight princess in a Zelda video game

I have a list of names to give to future snakes as well. Anything you think is neat that you would never consider naming your own child is a good name :)

I like to name all of my animals after either characters from books and movies I like or from people (gods and such) from mythology.

Cats:

Taz - Tazmanian Devil from the cartoons. He was crazy as a kitten.

Gwydion - In Welsh mythology, Gwydion is a magician appearing prominently in the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi and the ancient poem Cad Goddeu. The name Gwydion may be interpreted as "Born of Trees". I just really like the name Gwydion.

Hermione - From Harry Potter.

Blossom - Because my dad called her "fart blossom" due to the fact she was very gassy when we got her because she was starved and that's what happened when she started getting food on a regular basis.

Rabbit:

Aria - A character from a book and I fell in love with the name. Actually wanted to name one of my kids that. Now if I do they will be named after a rabbit lol.

Snakes:

Sylvara - Named after a silver dragon in the book Dragonlance. In the book it is Silvara. But I had to use a y instead for my character on World of Warcraft who is also named after the dragon.

Sigyn - A goddess and wife of Loki in Norse mythology.

Jack - The banded cali kingsnake. He looked like the big snake that ate the Christmas tree in The Nightmare before Christmas. But since it doesn't have a name we named him after Jack Skeleton.

Jormungand - Another name from Norse mythology. He is the giant serpent that wraps around the world. Also called the Midgard Serpent or World Serpent. He is the arch enemy of Thor. I gave this name to my newest "banana" cali king (reverse wide stripe) because he is so mean and bity.

This is like naming a dog "Fido" but I always thought it was cute when someone got a corn snake and named it "Cornelius".

Here's my names.

Draco= My big amel corn named after the dragon in "Dragonheart" LOVE that movie!

Viper= the central plains milksnake because I couldn't find a pic of one and we got to joking that maybe he WAS a coral snake! ( He's way too friendly though! )

Wishbone= the baby amel corn because she's got a perfect wishbone shape on her forehead. ( I love naming corns after what the shape on their forehead looks like! )

Ruby= my cocinnus garter because she's spotted with red and very pretty

Bogo= my wild garter because I got 2 snakes that weekend.

Franco= my Kenyan sand boa who was originally named after the actress Francesca Annis who played Jessica in the first Dune movie. ( Then we found out SHE was really a HE! ) Small tip. Unless you are absolutely certain about the sex, androgenous names work better.

Smoothie= the saharan sand boa because, well, he's smooth!

Svaha= the anery Kenyan sand boa. Its a native American word for the space of time between the lightning and the thunder.

Onyx= the baby black snake who's spending the winter with me----SO FAR!

There's my names for my batch of slithers. Feel free to borrow any if you like.:)

Devon
