some concern for tiny snake

Mr Oni

New member
Hi, I'm new to forum.
I have a Baby Miami corn and this guy is tiny.
I can provide pics in morning.

This guy is wild caught, we found him in a dug up part of the yard 3 1/2 to 4 weeks ago where he was in the open yard, it's getting cold here and the plentiful amount of barn cats and birds helped me decide to keep him.

He hasn't ate yet, I brought him to a reptile guy who breeds, owns and maintains herps at home as well as the store he works at 'Country Max'
I brought in my snake to show him and told me that he was way too small for pinkies and to do the cricket thing till he can start on the pinkies.

Because
I tried F/T 3 times
F/t braining 2 times
Live with F/t brains on him...snake cuddled with him in the paper bag for 25 hours.

I've done these as care sheets indicate so not to stress snake/scare him of eating and did what the majority is said on forums and herp people.

I was told that he's sizing up the prey but he is too small.

I just don't know about the cricket thing and i want as much input or idea that i can get because i feel lost on this guy.

Has not shed nor looks to be getting ready to shed
Lots of energy
He has been acclimating to viv good
He has 3 hides 1 cool, 1 medium and 1 warm.
Humidity is good
i used reptile carpet but changed to substrait which is better on temp and humidity i noticed.
he's calm and relaxed in your hands.

Sorry for the layout of my post. I'm trying to explain a months worth of this.

Don't try to feed him crickets! No offense but if that guy told you that's OK I would go to somebody else for advice. Insects are not a natural prey for corns. Do you have a kitchen scale? If so getting a weight in grams would be helpful to determine if the snake is actually too small for pinkies, but a lot of the little ones can take newborn pnks. Tease feeding is a good way to get reluctant babies to eat, as is scenting with lizards.

yes, I only have that guy and a small pet store owner who also said crickets lol.
It's almost maddening.

i will buy scale to get accurate weight.
I've irritated him with the pinkies and he gets into an S and each time my heart jumps because he looks like he's gonna finally do it....but then he ignores it.
I'm cool with the lizard scent but i've heard it can become necessity and they stay stuck on only scented pinks.

So if he is the right weight i will start lizard scent i guess
But what if he turns out to be too small...then what?

have you tried leaving the pinkie in with him and closing the viv? I have one that will take it from the tongs, and my other prefers to take it on his own

Your location says New York. Is that where you found this "Miami"??? If so it is most likely NOT a corn snake and probably an eastern milk snake, Lampropeltis triangulum triangulum. They are awesome snakes, but very very hard to start on pinkies. If that is the case you will most likely be assist feeding mouse tails if you choose to keep it.

Ding ding ding!!! Somehow, I missed the whole part about it being a w/c Miami in upstate New York after reading too small for pinks, guy suggesting crickets, etc. I would say there's an extreme likelihood this is no corn snake.

Here are some really crappy cell pics for comparison. It's too dark in the house this morning.

Well, there's something that deserves a big face palm, i questioned how the heck it could be a Miami before since we have no lizards here.

Well, you guys are freaking fantastic and now that im looking at these pictures and a whole slew of them on Google, i'm seeing that his coloring and pattern is spot on to the eastern milksnake. I will still throw up some pics when i get a chance to confirm but it looks like it is.

I really need to just come here for my questions instead of these local pet people.

I will try some different methods to get this guy to eat.

I hope you can get it to eat. L.t.t.'s are some of my favorites. Be sure and get some pics if you can. I really like to see the regional variation in eastern milk snakes. The methods to get it eating aren't much different than corns except they can be much more difficult to get started. Most breeders of North American milks start out by assist feeding mouse tails then try to move up to pinkie heads then day old pinks. You can expect it to be picky for a while. I have one that is over a year old and still refuses fuzzies. Don't be afraid to try different scenting techniques, lizard, shed snake skin etc. Once it eats you can start weaning to unscented pinks.

Oh man those little guys are so cute. <3 Good luck with your little one and no offense to that guy you asked, he may work with reptiles but he OBVIOUSLY does not work with corns.

this is what i had on me but i will get some more.

Don't worry the heating rock was only used for that day because it was all i had until the stores opened. but you can see how tiny compared to the wire he is

You have to save the picture to your computer first, or upload it to Photobucket first in order to post the picture. We can't see it, because it's protected by your e-mail.

Anytime. ;)

(For future reference, Photobucket links have an "IMG Code" section. Use that one to post pics right in the thread, like I did here.)

BEAUTIFUL Eastern milk!!
Good luck getting the little guy to eat. I don't know a whole lot about these guys but if anyone can help you it will be someone on this forum for sure!
Great find!

He's so cute! I hope he doesn't drive you insane, trying to get him to feed. I, myself, would never attempt a WC EM, unless it was some sort of exceptional specimen.

Because of my miserable history, I would release him, but you might as well try to feed him first. That's one species I was an utter failure at. A local guy caught a gravid WC and I felt sure I could feed the babies. If memory serves, out of 9 babies, we got one to eat unassisted -live pink, tree frog scented. The w/c mom took to mice right away though. There's a thread about it, I think on KS, but I don't even remember what year it was now. What did surprise me was how many people came out of the woodwork that had worked with them. Tails kept them alive long enough to release them, but I'm not sure they wouldn't have been better off if we'd have just turned the whole clutch loose at hatching. Here's hoping your luck will be better than mine! They sure are pretty snakes.
