Inigo has had a small problem with his tale for a while, but it only seems to be getting worse. I'm not sure what the matter is, so I've uploaded a few pictures. (He just shed two days ago.)

Did someone catch it in a lid? Looks broken and the tip will probably die and fall off. Is the wound open, I cant tell.

Maybe you can keep him on paper towels until it falls off so it minimizes the possibility of infection.
 
Do you check his shed thoroughly to make sure he has shed everything, including the eye caps and tail?

It's possible that he hasn't been shedding completely, and the tail part has been left on. Which would cut off the blood supply to the tail if not removed, and the tail will drop off :(
 
Soak or lube the tail to remove the dead skin. If the tail is not already necrotic, it should be fine. When I first looked at the picts I thought it might be a degloving but on second glance it's probably just as Susielea stated, improper shed. If the tail is damaged beyond repair, keep it clean and use some antibiotic ointment on it and the surrounding tissue. I would probably keep the snake on paper towel or some other substrate that won't collect on the ointment. It will most likely dry up and fall off assuming no infection takes hold. Your snake will have a stubby tail but you'll love it anyway!

So we just soaked him, and tried to remove some of the extra shed. This revealed that the tip of his tail is in fact almost severed. Is our best decision to simply wait until it fails off? Or should we try to remove it manually?

Yes from what I can see, simply wait for it to fall off.
Now please keep an closer eye on your snake next time it sheds
