Stay safe other East Coast friends!

Yo Duff I'm right in Pelham Bay right off the Whitestone & throggs Neck bridges in the bronx. We been getting rain on & off. I cant waite for the storm to hit:D
Good luck, man. We're up in the hills (Bald Hill), so no real flooding worries for us. The kids think this is the coolest thing ever. Probably won't be much sleep here tonight. Bring it on!

I'm west of DC and it's been raining all day - nothing really bad yet but I expect the wind will really pick up tonight. I even tied down the deck furniture (it moves in a normal thunderstorm) and brought Shelly (our sulcata tortoise who has been outside all summer) inside - she's not happy with me. School is supposed to start for the students on Monday so hopefully it's just a lot of rain and we don't lose power.

It's true, a lot of NYers aren't taking this too seriously. I'm in Brooklyn and most of my family members aren't too scared by it. :/ Meanwhile I'm scared of this old house falling over from winds, uncovered windows shattering, and general lack of supplies.

I don't think this is going to be a very serious threat. Category 1 is nothing to sneeze at, but a WHOLE lot better than a Category 3 storm.

I expect there is going to be some flooding and trees knocked over from the winds and having the ground softened up from all of the rain. Probably the worst threat will be tornadoes being spawned from the landfalling storm bands.

Oh, I do hope people are prepared for having the power go out. Those falling trees will likely snag power lines.

Rich, a category 1 "is something to sneeze at" A category doesn't tell you how much flooding or storm surge you'll get. I'm finally on the backside of the storm down here in VA and my suv is sitting in about 5ft of water, most major streets, tunnels, and bridges are closed due to flooding. PLEASE TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY

sorry my phone message that message up, I really meant to say that it might not be something to sneeze at but categories don't tell you...stupid autocorrect.

How's everyone doing out there? I hear a lot of people are without power. My thoughts are definitely with you east coasters right now.

It's pretty much gone where I am. Had lots and lots of wind and rain last night but it's died down. I'm glad that I took the time to tie down the deck furniture! Then again I'm pretty inland so we didn't get hit as hard as the coast.

Our power was knocked out from early Sunday morn to early Mon. morn. I kept checking the snakes. It was cool but not drastically so. Most were still hanging out on the cool side under their water bowls.

I was more worried about the horses! In the summer, they normally spend the nights outside and the days locked in their stalls. I thought that if the barn got damaged then the paddock would be safer. So that's what I did. I woke up around 3 a.m. to 30 mph winds and everything dark. REALLY dark! Do you know how scary 30 mph winds are????? And we live where the house is surrounded by trees and the paddock is mostly trees with a small L shaped section at front near the barn that's tree free. We heard trees falling all night long. Do you know how scary that is?????? You're thinking, 'Did that fall in the paddock?' We discussed going out and bringing them in but I had heard SOMETHING go flapping past the window and I didn't want to get hit by something I couldn't see flying about. I LOVE storms but this one scared me!

Got up the next morning and the horses were fine. They we very, very wet and wanted to come in very badly but otherwise not a scratch. So thankful for that! A tree was down on the fence but its poly coated high tensile wire, cut the tree and the fence will spring back into place. We just gotta tighten up the wires. ( I wonder how the Chincoteague ponies fared? I'm sure the winds were much stronger there. )

Surprised that we got power AND phone AND internet back so soon! Really surprised that the internet is working fine. Normally after a storm like that, we're out for a week or more. I still need to call family and friends to check and see if they're okay. My brother lives in Paoli near Philly and they had 50 mph winds predicted so I'm rather worried about him. It seems southern Vermont got hit rather badly too and my parents live in northern Vermont. So later, after NORMAL people have rolled outta bed, I'm gonna make a bunch of phone calls.

Hope you guys living in the affected areas are okay! We're warming up the chain saw here!

Well,Irene was not the monster storm they predicted - I'm glad, but I'm also worried for those people who next time won't take another storm seriously. Here, when we had to evacuate for Rita & it went to Beaumont instead so many people who were told to get out for Ike didn't listen--resulting in at least 112 deaths. Meteorologists are only capable of making an educated guess-hurricanes seem to have a mind of their own

Well It's gone. I lost power and my snakes started to get really cold. then the power came back on. Irene left broken branches all over my yard. It seems that all Irene wanted to do was make more yardwork for me...
