Stepped over to the dark side...

I wish they'd do that here. The breeders say they won't eat unless you feed live and I've found that to be true of this species. I've had wild caught animals that I fed up for rehab before release that took f/t. A rat snake that was caught at work and was very thin took f/t and I can tell you that it had NEVER eaten f/t ever. I rescued a burm that had only been fed live for 3 years of it's life and it took f/t. I've never had trouble getting any snake to take f/t except the balls. Even my little snail eaters will take f/t snails without issue and they are wildcaught adults.

It does seem strange doesn't it. And I don't know why live feeding is so common and widely accepted for royals by most breeders and keepers alike in the states. Yet most people do not recommend it for any other species (not including the rarer specialised species).

In the UK you are verbally beaten to a pulp for feeding so much as offering a gimpy half dead rodent/lizard/whatever to anything. Big on the ole ILLEGAL OMG YOU EVIL PERSON thing here...

You should hear what folks have to say if they find out about feeding off kinked or DIE snakes to kings/milks etc.

And thats SO cool your snail eaters eat FT! Probably an absolutely ridiculous question but do you feed the FT snails shells on or off?

Hey why do they call them royal pythons on your side of the pond?

The name "royal python" (from the Latin regius) is based in part on the story that Cleopatra supposedly wore the snake around her wrist. I don't know why we refer to them as royals as opposed to ball's. I prefer royal. It sounds much nicer than ball python.

I take the snail out of the shell. Tried leaving them in once but they didn't touch them. I should try again with them partially out of the shell. They are out each night and if I've got the snail pieces they will take them from your fingers. Pretty fun!

Sibon Nebulatus:cloudy snail eaters. Believe it or not, I use a corn on the cob holder to remove the snail fromt he shell. I use the sharp point and snag the snail and pull it out. They'll eat f/t slugs as well. They are hit and miss with the canned stuff. My newest male seems to be pretty good about taking those. Wish I could find some of the other species...they are just so uncommon.

He is a very handsome man. I love my Royals. They are the first snakes i ever owned. So welcome to the dark side. I think the last royal morph i have right now is my Axanthic.

He setted in fast :p
