Substrate.

There are many reasons not to use sand for cornsnakes, most of which have already been covered. Let me also add that sand tends to creep--much like discussion threads. If you have it in a tank, soon it will be all over your house!

There are many types of substrate that are ok to use--even astroturf, though I wouldn't recommend it--but my snakes seem to prefer aspen.
 
I personally use newspaper (easy to clean) and Astro turf (think it looks great).

I recently sold my Corn Snake couple (also have Ball Pythons), but I have 6 CS hatchlings, and their new owners are all wondering what's best to use in the cage for their new "babys".

Does anyone have a picture of aspen? I'm not sure what it's called in icelandic.
 
I think this shows it pretty well. It's a type of wood that's been shredded. It doesn't have any of the oils that might cause problems to a snake.

Lost of people over in Europe will use Beech wood instead of Aspen. It is safe, and seems to be easier to obtain over there.
 
I just switched my adult snake over to aspen from repti-bark. I wasn't sure how much to put into Tiaga's viv, I have maybe 2 inches. She/He is about 4 1/2 feet and certainly hasn't tried to burrow in it at all. Is that enough aspen? Just wondering
 
i use about an inch, too much will prevent heat getting through from the uth,
just my opinion, correct me if im wrong. . .
 
I threw a whole bag in there, but then I have an adult, so he's a lot bigger than a hatchling. He probably had a good four inches in there. It's not currently near as fluffy and probably is only about two now... interestingly enough he's figured out a way to move it around so he has more available in certain areas that he prefers :)
