tail whip to the eye, crying & fustrated.

yea I unpluged the heat this morning, I didnt have time to deal with the temp before I went to work. after though, I called the company and they dont have a replacement for me until next week, annoying and dissappointing, I payed 50 dollars, and they are trying to ask me what I did wrong. its NEW doggone it!
anyway, the UTH is just off to one side, it takes up about half of the tank, I have a digital gage taped onto the floor Inside the tank, under all the bedding, so she cant move it, even when shes digging under the deep bedding.
there are display lights set up on each tank (no heat) and those go on and off with a timer, as for my new snakes, I have them in a spare bedroom, so they dont have to look at me, or my cats. im probily overthinking this, I know how to let them settle in, but its just like wow... what am I doing wrong.. Ive never had this much trouble with any of my new pets before.. its like this season alone has made foul tempered animals all the way around.

When you say a "gage" do you mean a thermostat or a thermometer?

And with your display lights, can you actually safely touch the bulb yourself and not feel any heat from them at all?

If Brent says this snake was previously mellow in his care, I would suspect some scent or condition that is now making it act up or it just feels too exposed in its new viv. I would put lots of hides in with the snake to give it more security and keep lighting dim and the cats out of the room. Wait a bit to have a handling session, but when you do don't let the snake "win" by putting it back in its tub as soon as it starts acting up, keep handling it gently (but firmly enough to not let it bite you or flail its tail around) it should eventually realize that while it can't bite you or get away. it will come to no harm .
This being said, I personally think some corns just never settle down. You may find that even after you follow all the advice and everything is perfect, you just ended up with a wild one. I have an adult snake that behaves this way too and has since I got him, Zephyr darts out when his tub is opened, hisses and strikes when picked up, and spends every second of being handled trying to get away and whipping his tail around. I've gotten a red welt across my face from his tail. Those tail whips can hurt!! It can be intimidating at first but I don't know, I just got used to it and I know to put on gloves and be ready for a bit of an adrenaline rush whenever I go to open his cage LOL

yea, I have both of the cheap ones inside, hydrmotat and thermometer, the thermostat died on me yesterday, painful death, took it back to the place where I got it.
and yea, the lights are L.E.D. lights, little display lights, I held them for a good 10 minuets and thought I felt heat, but when I picked up the other one, I figured it got hot from my hand, because the new one was still cold. let me see if I can find a picture for you.

Lol Gawd I hope not Ghost, that would be horrable, cause I hold my snakes, all of them, all the time, and I have to say, she was the first to give me roadrash on my arm That deep. my BP bit me once, but it was a test bite I think, it surprised her when she relized that I wasent edable, and I didnt even bleed after.

I held the male, he did the whole get away as fast as he can, but when I managed to get him in my fingers, he settled down and seemily went to sleep, (we did sit out for a half hour, only the last 5 minuets did he accually settle down)

I have seen adult corns before but If all breeders get them to this HUGE size, I have to ask, WOW, how did you do it?! I gadda send driz a message, none of the ones Ive seen in other peoples care were ever as big as these babys. heck mine isnt half as big.

LED lights are great - like you say, light with little heat. Nice choice.

Do you have a different thermometer that you could use to double-check temp readings? Some of the cheaper ones can be very inaccurate. My nephew had one that didn't even register when the heat mat was accidentally switched off at the plug.

yea I have a Didgial one taped to the floor inside of one of my tanks, its reading 68 now cause the heat pads are unplugged, but without the control gage, the temp UNDER all the bedding is 106 + (had a empty cage set up for 3 days before I put anything in it, and the light temp (air temp) and temp of the gage from the inside of the tank consirned me thats why I splirged and got a regulator, Ive had snakes forever, without heat in the tank, they can survive another week without it. Id rather have cold snakes then cooked, dead ones.

I'm interested by this. Didn't you say that none of your snakes lasted over a year?

I think the stress of moving and the smell of cat is what's making your snake nervous, plus the erratic temperatures. I'm sure as soon as you get that settled, and she gets used to her new house, she'll be better. Though, the smell of cat may still make her uncomfortable.

no, thats not right, my first snake I Got from S.M.R. still alive, shes a few years old now. the pet store snake I got from a Local breeder infected and killed the other two I got from him, with some unknown sickness, they were eating, and throwing up and losing weight, but still trying to survive..it was bad. im lucky I had milky in a diffrent location, and I thought you were upset by everything I said Ziggy.

thanks Bitsy, do you by chance have any Idea of where I can order a good temp controler online? Ive looked but everything seems so expensive, and it was a Zoomed, so I dont know whats better anymore.

I'm in the UK so can't really advise on products your side of the Atlantic.

However, I've always used the cheapest thermostats available here in the UK and have only had one fail in 19 years. So you don't have to spend a vast amount of money to get hold of something that will do the job.

I don't know if you can get them there, but I use UltraTherm MatStats.

I was never "upset" by anything you said. I remember what you said in chat, and you said none of your snakes lasted over a year. If you didn't use heat for any of your snakes, well then yeah, they were probably too cold to digest their food so they regurged. You do live in Alaska after all.

I took them to the vet, and at the time I didnt have enough money to get those 3 any care, because they charge a exam fee up here of 75 dollars. Each. when they died, the necropsy however in the heck you spell it, was going to set me back 200. Each.
It Was a Sickness. if you dont want to believe that, thats up to you. MILKY is Still alive, I kept her in a diffrent location, in the same sort of set up. shes lived threw it.. hows that?
Please dont post to me Ziggy. I may have to stop replying to this thread if you do. and whatever you rememebered in chat is fine, however wrong it is. milky is alive and tongue flicking.

Man, you may not have worded it how you wanted to in chat, but it's not fair to be blaming ziggy. I heard the same thing she did and so did a couple others.

im not blameing anyone I want to be Left alone by Ziggy! now ziggy has two others in here to "the rescue?"
and im sorry cat, im sorry for being rude, but Ziggy and his/her gang of friends got upset a while back by something I said, Being in alaska, Ive looked up cornsnakse hundreds of times, this is my first time finding a site like this, and I was trilled to join, there isnt a big call for breeders in alaska, and the few snakes that get sold to the pet stores are from the "local" breeder, and are usually sick.
I see people going back and getting 'replacement' snakes from the same uncleaned cages that they got their snakes from some years before.
and when I joined I made the mastake of thinking that breeders were as few in the states, as here in alaska, cause Ive only heard of Don S. on the internet, and At The Time, was the only one I heard of, knew of, understood, That shipped to alaska. so I Raved about him, and people got upset because Apparently I didnt Know what I was talking about. im sorry Everyone. I wont make that mastake again.
im glad you heard it, go report me, please leave me alone, thankyou.

thanks everyone for All the Help youve given me, It Really was helpful, but, due to issues going on, I am dropping this thread.
to the gang, please dont leave me any private messages like last time, im already upset enough as it is.

There is no "gang," and no one sent you private messages "the last time."

Rein, if you want everyone here to "leave you alone", stop coming to the site. If you want help though, you will need to be a lot more clear and level-headed. Nobody is attacking you, but you are not communicating well and are acting rather childish. It might help if you think before you post, read over what you are saying to make sure it is clear, and check your spelling.

Didn't see this thread or know it was about my Okeetee's until today. :shrugs:

Have you asked Brent if she has always been nervous/grouchy? I'd ask him. Then you will know if it's you or just the snake.

They were ever nervous or grouchy other than getting excited at feeding time knowing the scent of food. I also was never bitten or struck at by either of the pair.

It's something to do with travel stress or the new location. I'm wondering about temperature too. You say digital guage. Is it one of those stick on color changing thermometers? Or is it a digital indoor/outdoor thermometer with a probe that you can put in the tank? Pics would help on that end as well.

To control temperature you want a thermostat. There are several kinds that can be used. Either of these would work great:

I can't see how saying Don S is wonderful is a problem! He has great snakes, and he's a nice guy! I have only met him momentarily at the Daytona show last weekend but I was impressed by how down to earth he is and EVERYONE says he has great snakes, so I can't see that you did anything wrong in praising him.

That wasn't exactly what was said, Betsy. He said that Don was the ONLY breeder that had healthy snakes. This was while no less than 3 great breeders from this site were present in the chatroom. That was what bothered people. I have some of Don's stock and they are wonderful as is Don's service and everything about dealing with him. It just seemed an insult to these fine people. I might actually have that chat log saved on my other laptop. I'll check when I get it back.
