Tank Heating Issues

TOO HOT

Yeah, I wish I would have paid closer attention to people and set my viv prior to purchase. I checked the temp of my hot side at the glass today and it was 150`F!!! No wonder my corn doesnt go over there. Right when I got it all set up it was 89`, but I can not remember if I got under the substrate. I yanked the cord and am building a rhetostat tonight from plans I found in the Misc forum. Under $7.00, cant beat that!
 
Another Issue

So I built the rheostat... now I am unable to keep it constant. The temp either slowly climbs or declines. Any ideas?
 
is it fluctuating due to ambient air temp?
Pay the extra for a real rheostat?

I actually just built mine this morning and it seems to be holding so far.
