The Best Lizard In Your Opinion?

Speaking of Leopard Geckos. Hubby just brought home a baby black blizzard. I still say go with the leo. AFT require a bit more than leos, with the humidity.

I really hope you're being sarcastic, Mike.......

No, I meant it.......
:laugh01:
You needs to get some fun in you son........

Chinese water dragons need a refridgerator sized enclosure(hight is #1 for them), and most are wild caught. They really don't make a good first lizard. We have a 2 year old female (guessing from her size) She is beautiful, very active and fun to watch. Mine is pretty tame, she likes to be hand fed minnow lol!
But they don't make very good hands on pets, Zap tries her hardest to get away at times and if she does she is fast!
Mmmm. I can see how that would talk someone out of wanting one...
And you keep them so it's not rocket science as you already know...
Everything is buyable and we all have to set up for the first time after much reading.....

I think Kate is making the best choice. Get a leo, by far the easiest and best starter lizard, then she can branch out later if she feels comfortable.
Prolly right... I just think everything is do-able as a first.. There is no ladder you have to ascend. Just surround yourself with research, other keepers and the right kit.... Nothing more, nothing less....

Just my 2 cents here, but I think a leo is just about perfect. I had one once and she was wonderful.
Also, please consider going with a breeder over a pet shop.
A breeder animal "might" cost a little more, but you will be able to get info about the parents, and you would be supporting someone who LOVES the species they work with, instead of a pet shop that will sell many things, but won't be invested in that particular species.

Fat-Tails are the best pet lizard. I've got around 60 without counting holdbacks and animals that are for sale. The genetic potential is huge with them. You'll spend a bit of money on the morphs, but they're a huge up and coming! They're much more docile than Leos, and require higher humidity. They take crickets and certain roaches easily, but sometimes don't take mealworms or superworms. My feeding bill is rather hefty, but I go through 6,000-8,000 roaches a week and 3,000 mealworms.

Don't listen to him, he's trying to sell them...

I don't keep CWD so I am unbiased in my decision....

I pretty much stand with Mike here. Kate is getting her very first pet lizard so what difference does it make if afts are "up and coming" or have a huge genetic potential??
Leos are prettier and easier to keep. Nuff said!

Leos and AFTs both make excellent pets. I prefer AFTs because they're calmer and (to me) are more interesting. The reason I say genetic potential is in case you decide to breed. Let's face it, most of the people who buy their first Corn (at least on this forum) decide to breed.

Ooh, I forgot to add, watching a leo hunting is just adorable! Blossom stalks her locusts like a cat and shakes her tail before pouncing!

BW77, I LOVE his name! Cute little guy!

Casey shakes his tail before attacking too. It is super cute. Loes have such great personalities.

I have zero lizard/gecko experience, but at some point in the future I think I would enjoy owning one. How does everyone feel about leachie geckos? Obviously the initial cost is pretty high, but other than that, how are they to care for and what are their personalities like? (I think they're adorable!)

I don't have any experience with Leo's, but from what I've heard, they're a great one to start with.

I keep Crested Geckos & I also have a Gargoyle Gecko. Both are pretty easy to keep. They eat Crested Gecko Diet, & occationally dubia &/or crickets for treats. You mist their cage at night, & that's pretty much it.

I agree with all of those that advise against getting anything that takes special requirements, when you're new to this.

Own a crested gecko first. Trust me. Get used to how the jump and act, plus their feeding and care. Leachies are less active but their bites can really hurt. My friend raises leachies and most are pretty okay, but some are nasty little buggers.

Well,

In my opinion, Stubby would have to be the the best lizard.....ever!!! :)

But seriously, Gecko's are the way to go.....just saying.

Who is Stubby rich? You have pictures to share?

And I think I will be going with geckos first, because I want an active fun pet, that is a joy in and out of their enclosure, and they live longer, so how cool would it be to have a 20 yr old lizard! I'd be 30 and still have her! :eek1:

I adore bearded, and feeding veggies would actually be fun, so my opinion may change, but I trust the members of this forum and the advice given here :)

Chinese Water are CUTE, but I always try to give my animals bigger-than -necessary enclosures, and to be honest, I have too many bookshelves in my room to fit the enclosure they require.

I'm sorry a moderator had to 'moderate' this forum, I had hoped feelings wouldn't be hurt when discussing 'best' types of lizards...

OH, and starsevol, you are right of course. I'm a rabbit breeder, I know better than to go to a pet store for an animal! I'm not sure what I was thinking when I typed that. Not saying I hate pet stores, but it IS nice to know what you are getting, and have a knowledgeable person to call on.

Does gender affect looks or temperament in the leos or the bearded?
I know in beardies, the girls seem fatter..
