I guess the price of freedom really is vigilance. Although this is aimed at all boas and pythons NOW, don't become comfortable if you keep only colubrids - you may be next! All U.S. citizens who care about freedom should comment on this whether you think you will ever keep a boa or python or not. This continuing assault on our freedoms never ends - I just get so tired of it all.

However, if they get an overwhelming response against it, they do listen - this kind of thing has been defeated before. Send well reasoned, respectful comments on why this could be devastating to the hobby - not just to breeders, but to product manufacturers and suppliers, expo promoters and vendors, and a whole host of other related businesses. During this time of economic downturn, the last thing we need is the government to put more people out of work for something will do little or no good for the purpose they say they want fix.

I hope everyone will read and reply to this. You know it won't stop there.

I sent off my comments to them this morning. Thank you for bringing this to everyone's attention. Let's all do our part to comment and keep this thread high on the list so everyone can see it, even if those who only pop in once in awhile. Heck, I think this should even be important enough to sticky, at least until the comments period expires.

Thanks for posting this, Kathy. I'm a member of a python forum, and we're all up in arms about this! As others have said, this isn't entirely about keeping large boids. This is about control, and regulating our freedom to keep the pets we choose, and it could end up including our corn snakes too. They are trying to go after my firearms, my pitbull, and now my reptiles. I've had enough, and it's time to fight back!

I do keep pythons as well as corn and rat snakes, so I will be sending my letters today. Everyone needs to send their comments as well; ALL snake owners and breeders could be affected by this pending legislation.

Great idea to contact manufacturers, distributors, expo organizers, etc.! I think this can be soundly defeated if enough people voice their opinion in a rational, polite manner.

Does anyone have any idea, why on the submission page, when I hit next step absolutly nothing is happening?

Yes, unfortunately all of our "special interest groups" (various kinds of pet or wildlife keepers, gun rights people, hunters, even smokers, etc) don't seem to see the connection. It never occurs to them that fighting as a group, even if you don't particularly like the others, has merit.

Nobody hates cigarette smoke more than I do (it makes me physically sick). But when Florida voted to ban smoking in all public places (including privately owned restaurants, stores, etc), I had to reluctantly vote no. I believe that each business should decide who its customers are and what they want. It is up to ME patronize those businesses who would decide, without government intervention, to ban smoking on their premises. That is the way I would like to change things, not through government coercion. The law passed, and I DO enjoy the benefits, but am sad at the way it was achieved.

Only the Libertarian Party seems to make the connection that to preserve the rights YOU cherish, you have to be willing to stand up for the rights of others, rights that you care nothing about. Big government (and the 2 main parties) has been able to take away freedoms successfully by the "divide and conquer" strategy among all of the smaller, special interest groups - and it has worked great!

I am really saddened and sickened, not only by the fact that the government does this stuff all the time (that is to be expected - it is the nature of the beast), but that WE allow it, and don't seem to even care, as long as it does not affect each one of US directly.

Done. Good suggestion.

I don't get it. Cats breed like rats; they're super-adaptable, highly-evolved killing machines that put native species in jeopardy wherever they are introduced. But because they're fwuffy and people wuv them, there's almost no restrictions on them. In most places, you're ALLOWED to let these animals out to destroy the local fauna. Most people don't like snakes, and they don't keep them, so they would support this sort of measure without thinking twice. Have you ever had a cat that was REALLY mad at you, and intent on injuring you? I have. Nothing like a mouthful of daggers and 20 razor-sharp scalpels going at you. I'll take the p.o.'d 8-foot boa.

Of course, there are many herpers who don't do much to encourage sympathy for our cause. Youtube's full of stupidity that could easily be used as ammo against us...

Perhaps a licensing scheme, similar to the U.K's DWA would stop the idiots and morons.
Allow full traceability of said animals, and allow the government to make a few bucks(they always like that). Really, why should anyone have the right to own any animal just because they THINK they should.
Filling certain criteria, before your allowed, would weed out the wheat from the chaff.

That's what Florida basically has done with the "big 5" large constrictors. Keepers in Florida will need a permit and will have to microchip them (for ID purposes if they escape).

"...why should anyone have the right to own any animal just because they THINK they should..."

It depends on what you think are your basic rights. Are they whatever the government says they should be? If so, what should it be based on? Should it be based on how much public harm is likely to be caused by irresponsible use of a right? If so, then we DEFINITELY need a permit to reproduce HUMAN children! What causes more harm than bad parenting from parents who never should have them in the first place?

I am not equating pet ownership with childbearing - well, not exactly. I am just trying to say that EVERYTHING we do - find a job, get married, drive or commute to work, buy a house or other goods, keep or breed pets - these "rights" to decide what we want out of life all fall someplace along the line of things that can help or harm other people. We have to decide as individuals and society which of those rights cause enough harm to society that we should curtail them to individuals. In my opinion, there should be GREAT likelihood of harm to society before we begin to curtail the rights of citizens in their own version of pursuit of happiness. I want to see the evidence of how much harm is likely to result, and I want it compared to the amount of harm that is likely from other, more accepted pursuits, before I accept more laws, permits, licenses, etc.

Modern society has gotten us used to the fact that everything we do needs to be regulated in some way. And because of the higher population densities, it is true to a certain extent. But if we could bring back somebody from 100 years ago, he / she would probably be shocked at the amount of regulation we have today.

the HTML code for a website would look something like this

also, if you'd like, I can email it

Hubby already figured it out and it is already up on my site - THANKS!

What program do you use to make that kind of flashing gif type banner? He never made a flashing one before. If I ever decide to advertise here again, I would like a banner like that. Any tricks on how to do it? You could email or pm me if you like, if it is complicated. Thanks!

Bill said that KS already has a chat / discussion panel planned for the end of this month. Fish and Wildlife plus lots of the big name breeders will be on it. Really fast action! Not surprising, since it is literally financial life or death for many of those breeders. The "squeaky wheel" tends to get the attention with government. If we squeak loud enough, they will probably back off. That is, if everyone does their part and writes in.
