The infamous banana and mayo sandwich

I think I ate that at Rich's house...

One of my favorite mayo dishes is broccoli salad, with white raisins, red onions, bacon.

Also- BLT would just not be right without mayo.

Also- I don't usually put anything on french fries, but I do like them with mayo. Never ketchup.

Due to my mild tomato allergy, mayo and alfredo (not together, that just sounds ick) have been my best friends in life.

To practice being tolerant, I tried the peanut butter, banana, and Duke's sandwich. I don't know if I prefer it over the banana and Duke's, but it wasn't what I expected at all. It oscillated from tasting like peanut butter and banana to tasting like Duke's and banana, but never all three. Plus it adds a little more nutrition. I'd have it again!

Nythain, I am not allergic to tomatoes but a raw tomato will make me gag. It's the only veggie I don't like (don't like is an understatement). I love tomato sauces, ketchup, fried green tomatoes, and can eat a red one if it is even slightly cooked, but I just can't do a raw one (unless it is in salsa with lots of cilantro). I've tried so hard to like them because they are healthy, but I just can't choke one down. And being a vegetarian, it seems like they are in everything!

I bet Trader Joe's Cookie Butter and banana sandwich would be good. I'm afraid to buy that, though- I think I'd just never stop eating it.

So I found myself looking at 5 brandnames of mayonnaise last night, and got one of each. Noticed they all seem to be made with various blends of oils, including soybean, which I presume is GMO Roundup Resistant. The only real difference my old tongue could find was the Duke's seems the saltiest. Which contrasts sharply with the sweetness of the banana. Like salty chocolate or salty black licorice. The banana mayo sandwich was. Oh, how to be polite. Interesting. So I was thinking to myself, which most of you who know me at all -is often dangerous territory, so a decision was made. A white bread/ Dukes Mayo & seedless watermelon sandwich, since I like salt on watermelon. Suffice it to say, don't bother ruining good mayonnaise.

Nanci, if you are anything like me you will want to stay away from the cookie butter (it lasted about two days in my house...also the average lifespan of a jar of nutella). I probably wouldn't like it with the banana sandwich since I prefer something savory to balance out the banana, which is why I use Krema peanut butter (the BEST!) or Duke's. But maybe some toast with cookie butter and banana for breakfast?

Dave, I agree that Duke's is salty but it also sticks out for me because it contains no sweetener which allows the vinegar flavor to stand out more. Most brands have sugar which just gives it an icky taste for me. I am less disturbed by your watermelon sandwich (I too was raised on watermelon with salt) than I am by the 5 jars of mayo you bought ;) As we say in Georgia "If it ain't Duke's it ain't mayonnaise!" I hope you didn't buy miracle whip!

Since you said savory, then you would appreciate that Trader Joe's recommends pairing Cookie Butter with their Plantain Chips. Which I love.

Not a Nutella fan, though. I'll drink hazelnut coffee if it's the only flavored kind, but it's my last choice.

I also like salt on watermelon.

Plantain chips? Why have I not seen these? Probably because whenever I go to Trader Joe's it is apocalyptic. The aisles are very narrow and parents always think it's a good idea to give each of their kids a mini shopping cart during peak hours, and I am always in a hurry to leave before I get cart rage (For the love of God I just want to grab a bottle of arrabbiata sauce could you please MOVE). I realize I have grocery store control issues so I usually shop late at night, when Trader Joes is closed. If I buy them I'll probably get hooked and then they'll discontinue them, like they inevitably do to all my favorite products (RIP spicy Thai green beans).

You can buy really good organic non gmo mayo at stores like fresh market or whole foods. But because the ingredients are more pure it doesn't last long once opened.

As a geneticist I have no problem with GMO per se, but that's a whole 'nother can of worms for me. Duke's for life!

My problems with GMO are are that long term health effects are unknown and what they are genetically modifying them with may cause more harm than good. plenty of natural organic things are toxic to humans. Many countries say there isn't enough research to prove its safe so they don't use it. However in the U.S. we say... there isn't enough research to prove its not safe so lets add it to our food. The U.S. has one of the highest cancer rates in the world and we allow higher "safe" amounts of food additives (like aspartame) than other countries.
I try to avoid GMOs and man made chemical food additives as much as possible.

I disagree with most of those points but won't elaborate on this particular thread ^_^. It may be even more controversial than the combination of bananas and mayonnaise!

Many people disagree over GMOs. I don't have a problem with genetic research especially if it can save lives and cure diseases like Alzheimer's and leukemia.

Heck I don't have a problem genetically modifying one plant with another as long as there is research done to show its safe for human consumption.

But I do know that the genetically modified corn and beets used to make sugar are genetically modified with a type of bacteria to make it resistant to pests and herbicides so its almost like the plant is its own pesticide... and that just doesn't seem healthy to me.

And I dont have any fancy degree in genetics I am only a Registered Nurse who reads a lot of medical and research articles

What is the general consensus of mayo vs Miracle Whip? I HATE Miracle Whip, my husband hates mayo! If I order a sandwich from a restaurant I have to make sure it isn't decorated with MW instead of mayo. Ish.

On the same line, I like spaghetti noodles, but I have to make two pots, one with Angel Hair pasta and one with spaghetti! I don't like the thin noodles, he doesn't like the thicker ones.

And Duxor, I hate cooked tomatoes! I love raw tomatoes, but if I open a jar of sauce I have to use the little hand puree machine on it until it is totally smooth. If I taste a chunk of hot tomato in anything I have to choke it down. So making pasta and meat sauce is such a big ordeal here.

Nythain, I love fried bologna! It was the first thing my mom ever let me cook alone. Slice it in half, then make 5 slices on the edges so it doesn't curl up, and fry until those "petals" are crispy! Mmmm! I never did it with a sandwich though, just the plain fried bologna.

Nanci, have you tried lemon juice on your fries? So good! Maybe a Greek thing, but I love lemon in almost anything.

Actually, you know what I like on fries sometimes? Vinegar! So I bet I'd like lemon, too.

I think mayo and Miracle Whip each have a place. I'm not a hater of either.

My favorite pasta shape is cavatappi, farfalle, or rotini. For flat pasta, pappardelle, or fettucine. But then I like capellini with any tomato sauce.

Trader Joe's freezer section has a TON of excellent pasta dishes, especially the fettucine Alfredo, with or without chicken, which is to die for.

I don't have an opinion on GMOs, really. I have a lot of Facebook friends who despise them.

Banana & mayo? Hmmmm..... Interesting.

But allow me....

You have not lived until you've eaten a PB&J on tuna fish sandwich !
