The infamous banana and mayo sandwich

Ramen noodles are completely different from chow mein noodles. You know what I love? Flat chow mein noodles! Actually, all types of Chinese noodles. Or Thai noodles. Especially Pad Thai. With no cilantro!!

Can't agree more. Pad Thai so amazing. Cilantro just makes it smell and (presumably) taste like dirty feet :(

Since this thread evolved from banana and mayo sandwiches to general weird things that we like to eat, I just remembered one other weird thing I like. Smoked oysters in a can! They look gross, they smell gross, but they are so flavorful. So far, I've convinced 2 people to try them against their better judgment and they have enjoyed them. Does anyone else like them? I used to like kippers in a can as well, but the bones just grossed me out too much.

I never tried oysters my whole life. Then, my ex-husband's family would make oyster soup on Christmas Eve, for his dad. BLECK!!! Then, I tried it. I love it. I still don't get into fried or steamed or raw or anything else oysters. And this is a pretty big oyster state.

Now I never tried pickled herring, either. I was at some in-laws, for some holiday, and tried it, and OMG! Where was that my whole life??? I LOVE pickled herring.

Sardines- I like them, but the bones...They give me the creeps. If I'm giving the dogs sardines, I'll take one bite. That's enough. Trader Joes has super-cheap sardines, BTW.

For omnivores, I made two really good TJ recipes:

The best- grill a pack of bison burgers (three), and mix into a prepared pack of Fettucine Alfredo. Kind of like stroganoff, but OMG!!! I bet you could add mushrooms and it would be even better.

Bake Whitefish Vera Cruz. Serve with the linguine with pesto and tomatoes on the side.

This is almost off-topic from where this thread has ended up, but I thought I'd mention I saw Duke's mayo at Aldi's. So, maybe anyone that has an Aldi's nearby could get it even if most stores in their area don't carry it. Cuz I don't remember seeing Duke's in the regular grocery stores around here.

I also eat smoked oysters and sardines (but they need to be high quality) as well as "fancy octopus."

Cilantro is my favorite herb, but I realize it is also the most divisive!

Awesome. We have Aldi's around here so I'll have to take a look.

This thread makes me want a SPAMburger :( Stoopid punks and hipsters going off increasing the cost of my SPAM threefold.

You can give me oysters any day of the week! Raw, on a saltine with lemon juice is my fave. We also make an INCREDIBLE oyster casserole every Christmas. Mmm.

Ooooh, Pad Thai!!! I agree, no cilantro, although I do put some in my quesidillas.

Have you tried the chow mein noodles, the ones in the blue can, dry, basically used in salads or topped on dishes.

Can you tell me more about the oyster casserole? My family makes southern style cornbread "dressing" with oysters in it but it basically looks like a casserole. I wonder if there are similarities?

I think it is similar. One packet of Ritz crackers, 1 big bag of shredded cheddar cheese, 2 bags of frozen chopped spinach, 2 jars of raw oysters, makings for bechamal sauce (and a dash of nutmeg in the sauce) and fresh parmesan.

Make creamed spinach with the spinach and sauce, the creamier the better (and we make extra because creamed spinach with hard-boiled egg on top is my sister's and my favorite dish).

Layer a handful of crumbled Ritz on the bottom of a Pam'ed casserole dish, then creamed spinach, then some oysters, then a layer of cheddar, and keep layering until it is all in the dish (usually about 3 layers). If the oysters are really big, cut them in half. Top with some fresh parmesan.

Bake at 375° for about 45 minutes or until bubbling.

And then once you've had it, tweak it to your liking, more or less cheese, crackers, or whatever you like. The creamed spinach is what soaks into the Ritz and makes them soft, giving them the stuffing texture.

Nearly everyone who has ever said they HATE oysters and are positive they won't like this dish goes back for seconds.

Enjoy!

(Oh, and to keep this relevant to the thread, add 1/4 teaspoon of Mayo)

That sounds terrible!!

I had Trader Joe's Thai Shrimp Fried Rice last night. It was so good!!! Spicy.

Yeah, that sounds nothing like our oyster dressing, but I'll try anything once or twice!

They make a thing down here called corn chowder, where you make a box of Jiffy corn muffins, and put in two ??? cans of cream corn or one of each, and top it with shredded cheese. OMG. So good.

Nanci, my family makes essentially the same thing except they call it corn casserole. Normally we don't eat sweet corn bread but that stuff is delicious!

i thought chowder was soup. Nanci's recipe doesn't sound like soup. But, whatever you call it, I've made something similar and it is good! We like to add jalapeno to add a little kick! I love the sweet/spicy mix of flavors.
