The Official Paper Towel Roll Thread

Dolemite

Hi! I'm Scooter!
attachment.php

You know, I bought my buddy Scooter here a nice tank and filled it with all sorts of fun things for him to play with. In addition to plenty of bedding to burrow in, there's a ceramic hiding log, a tree and plant to climb on, vines that suction cup to the wall, a nice water bowl…but his favorite thing has always been his precious paper towel roll.

It started out when he was a baby…I read that baby Corns like to hide in toilet paper rolls, so I put on in his tank, and within seconds he was hidden inside. He grew so attached to it that he still hid in it, even when he had outgrown it and was hanging out each end. So I upgraded him to a full paper towel roll and again, he loved it. However, as he got bigger, he got this strange habit of tightly bunching up at one end. It was hilarious- every time I picked up the paper towel roll to take him out to play, I'd hev to dhake the end until he popped out like one of those novelty peanut cans with the spring loaded snake inside. So, now that he's a year and a few months old and about 3 feet long, I found a suitable replacement- a poster roll from the post office. Again, he loves it and now he has plenty of room.

Anyone else have a Corn obsessed with his paper towel roll? And if you've never tried giving him/her one, do so and report the results here.

I use paper tubes for all my smaller snakes. They seem to like them even when they have out grown them. It's like buying Christmas presents for little kids and they play with the wraping. Go figure.

Yup, I posted about Gailleann not that long ago... except I can't get her to give up papertowel roll, not even for a fancier one that would give her plenty of room... apparently she likes being squeezed to death...sigh....

My female avalanche loved her toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls. I never thought of a poster roll, that's a really good idea. Other corns would use theirs but this girl was obsessed! I noticed little creases in her scales from the edge of the paper towel roll (from cramming herself in) so, much to her dissapointment, I removed it. She had other hides which she ignored and plenty of bedding to tunnel through the whole time... :p

I did take it away from her for awhile, but then I felt so guilty I gave it back... She's one happy little (or not so little) snakelet now :)

I've got one who absolutely adores her paper towel tube. She's not too big for it yet, but I'll remember the poster roll tip when she gets that large. One of the others has a favorite butter box. Forget the plants, the rocks, the vines. Yep, just like a kid playing with the wrapping paper and the bows!

I posted it before, but here it is again. It's so easy to weigh the little bugger when he's comfortable, haha. Great idea for a thread!

I have a few 07 that need to be supersized - I need to switch them from TP to paper towel size LOL

My snakes, my mice and my child all love their paper towel rolls. When I was young the wrapping paper tubes ( used a sword and light sabers ) got more use than the toys...good thread idea too...I'll post some pics later

I missed this the first time you posted it... what did you give him? I know Gailleann turned her little snout up at the heavy duty roll I put up for her. Although Daire loves the matching one that was sent... better than the $20 log I bought for him.

Yeah, you can pick up poster rolls way cheap at the post office. They're a little longer then a peper towel roll, but they're much sturdier, so I was able to trim it down using a saw. It's now the same length as a paper towel roll, but much wider.

Scooter still has a way to go before he out grows the poster roll, but I already have a back-up just in case. I live in NY near Manhattan and was in the Hard Rock Café one night and noticed in the gift shop they had these t-shirts that came in large cardboard cylinders, much like a paper towel roll, but much wider. I explained to the worker about my snake and asked if they had any extras and he gave me two, no charge. They're a decent bit wider than the poster roll, so depending on how big Scooter gets, I have these t-shirt rolls as a back-up. :)

BTW, here's a few more pics:

How thick are those? I'm wondering how easy it would be to drill a hole at each end? Gailleann thinks she's a Amazon Treeboa and there for the hide must hang. At least she's not a cobra anymore :)

Like I said, the poster rolls are a bit thicker and sturdier than your typical paper towel roll. The one I have stood up to the wood saw I used to trim the end with no problem. Drilling holes in either end of a poster roll so you can hang it should be no problem at all- certainly much easier than doing so with a paper towel roll.

Now that you mention it, that's an interesting idea. Where do you hang it from, and how high do you hang it? How big is your tank? I might have to try that when I eventually upgrade Scooter to a bigger tank.

That was just a TP roll.

I work in a print shop, we do large format and all the machines run on paper that comes on rolls. These are rolls I can stand on and not bend, really heavy duty. And we give them away for free for anyone who wants one - just an idea if any of you are looking for bigger rolls. I'll probably snag a few when FinFang gets older.

She's in a 29gal tall that someone gave me (my Pewter is in the second one, but it's laying on it's side) several years ago. I put the holes in and then used a heavy shoelace, half on each end.

This is the best picture I have on this particular computer to show you. I just have it hanging from the cover. I'm just carefully when I take the cover off at feeding, although convincing her to come out of there can be a little difficult :)

BTW, I was referring to FinFang's pattern. Is there any way to edit your posts after you make them?

And Weebonnilass, that set-up you have in your snake's tank is really cool. I have to try something like that. I bet Scooter would love it.

Wow, he's talented to get all of that in a TP roll... wow, my girl hangs out of her paper towel roll, although I have had to take a bit off to get it to fit inside the tank.
