~~❦~~ The Wine Drinkers' Thread! ~~❦~~

Nanci

Alien Lover
I always _say_ I want to start a thread about wine tasting. Here it is! I love wine. Almost every kind. Red, white and rosé. Expensive, cheap, and everything in between.

I'm starting it off with a wine I haven't drank before.

Gnarly Head Authentic Red 2010. Lodi. $11.79 at a wine shop.

50% zinfandel, 20% merlot, 17% cabernet sauvignon, 10% petite sirah and 3% syrah.

Here is the review from Cheap Wine Ratings.com

The nose on this wine is intense and beautiful, with cherry cola, blackberry and spice aromas. The palate is fruit-forward—very fruit-forward—with rich, juicy blackberry, black cherry and blueberry flavors. In a way, it’s almost like a slice of blueberry pie. While I wouldn’t call this a sweet wine, there is a definite sweetness to the fruit flavors. On the mid-palate, dark chocolate flavors show up to the party. The acidity is good and the mouthfeel is nice. It finishes long with lingering chocolate and black cherry flavors.

This isn’t a wine that’s going to appeal to snobs looking for a refined and elegant wine. This is a casual, fun wine with bold flavors that are intense enough to stand up to rich foods like barbecue or burgers. Those looking for a rich, juicy, fruit-forward wine will love this one.

*******************************
Nose: plum, blackberry, spice.

Chocolate, smooth, not overly tannic. Fruity, rich, black fruit.

My Rating: 4.0 Like a lot, buy again.

Hi Nanci,

I'm drinking a 2004 Pinot Noir, Sweeny. A wine by the Cherry Hill Winery, with a private label by the owner to give away to family and friends. Turns out he ended up with more wine than family or friends, so he was selling it. I liked it and got a case.

We drink a lot of wine... A LOT. I come from an italian family where gardening, cooking, and of course wine drinking was well, a requirement. my grandfather made his own back in PA, but it was more of a red grape liquor than it was a wine - for those familiar see Deigo Red.

The 'everyman' wine my family and I have settled on striking a balance of taste and affordability is Ecco Domani. I cook and drink their line regularly. I could easily exist on their Chianti and Pinot Grigio for any occasion.

I really don't play with anything high end because 1. I cant afford to, and 2. one thing my family taught me is if you dont have $500+ to spend on a bottle, you are not going to notice the difference between a $25 vs a $75 bottle... especially at the rate we go through them :)

I don't drink wine that often but I do like the red wine at times. I am trying something different - Marques de Montanana Granacha 2010, product of Catalayud (Spain)

So Dale...how do you like our Florida wines? I like the BOGO cases from San Sebastian or Lakeridge. Dakotah is right by me, and has great blueberry wine.

Ecco Domani Pinot Grigio is a great white stand-by! Just had that on Thankgiving.

give apothic red a chance. it's one of my favorite 10.00-15.00 per bottle wines.

Oh, Apothic Red is definitely one of the red blends I like! I also like Menage a Trois, Red Truck, Big House Red. Relative Red and Primal Roots red are okay. Cellar No. 8 red is so-so.

i'm not a fan of primal roots, too acidic for me and i didn't really care for big hourse red or red truck. if you're into sav blancs, my favorite is whitehaven and monkey bay, both from marlboro. whitehaven is really grapefruity. beach house is a fairly popular sav blanc blend.

My favorite Sauv Blanc is Kim Crawford. I like Cupcake, though, and Horse Heaven and The Jibe- which I loved, but can't find any more. Sam's Club has Kim Crawford _cheap_. It's still kind of a special occasion bottle, though, for me.

I have a friend locally that loves them, I guess they had a bogo offer a few weeks ago? because he messaged me letting me know. I haven't sampled them yet, but he loves them and visits the wineries whenever he gets the chance. I'll have to make a point to grab some.

I saw you mentioned Red TRuck. We had a bottle of that in a mix match case we received as a gift for our wedding. Good wine.

I like Red Truck a lot. It took some working up to, though. Menage a Trois red is my go-to red blend.

A lot of people don't like the Florida wines because they are made from Muscadines. They _are_ sweet, but sweet wines are great for summer! Both San Sebastian and Lakeridge have BOGOs ever couple months. You can buy it at Publix, too. They grow the grapes at Lakeridge, and I _think_ the wines are the same, just labeled differently for each winery.

Here's a funny story I told Pugs a while ago. So- there's this website called Wine Woot. A few weeks back they had this woot, which was two wine samplers from Tasting Room. I was intrigued- wine samplers! How cool! Mostly wines I was unfamiliar with. I thought, $45 for 12 bottles! I guess I was thinking they were 375 ml. I was so excited!!

I had to get them shipped to a friend's house, because you have to have an adult signature, and since they aren't sent overnight, the FedEx ground place doesn't let you pick them up. (Maybe I could just ship to my FedEx???) Anyway, I went to get them and the box was...small. So I excitedly opened it up, and the bottles were 50ml! Is that even a glass??? Oh well. It will still be fun to taste them.

Rex Goliath Moscato. Argentina. NV.

Nose: peach, apricot.

Very strong taste of honey lemon! Tart, sweet. Moscato is very popular right now. This one is a little different. It almost reminds me of the petrol taste of some German Rieslings- but not quite.

My rating: 3.5. Like it a lot, buy again. This is a non-wine drinker's wine.

2011 Pancake Cellars Big Day White- $7 @ Trader Joe's

Chardonnay, Viognier, Muscat Canelli, White Riesling, Chenin Blanc, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris

"First thing you need to know about Trader Joe’s Pancake Cellars Big Day White is that there is no Pancake Cellars. Pancake Cellars is one of the many labels produced by Central Coast Wine Warehouse a contract wine producer, they make 50+ labels, many of which are first class wines." -cheap wine finder dot com

Nose: yellow apple, faint pine??

Taste: beer??? oak, butter, cantaloupe.

Rating: C+/B- I'd buy it again. Might be better in the summer. It's much more oaked than I like. The oak covers everything up. It has a nice acidity. It's pretty substantial.

Edit: I see I'm mixing my rating systems. So I rate this a 3.5.

Apothic Red is one of my faves.
Some others are almost anything from Pasek Cellars (Mt Vernon,WA) they have wonderful fruit wines: blackberry, rasberry, & even the pineapple one is good.
Chocolate Shop is pretty much my #1 brand. I first tried their chocolate wine (the red wine infused w/ chocolate, not the one that looks like chocolate milk), & it's fabulous! I also have recently tried the strawberry version...yum!

I love fruit wines. Florida has a bunch of wineries with various fruit wines, especially blueberry. And so does Georgia. I wish Rich loved wine like I do- we could do so much wine exploring in OH and KY!!

My wife and I enjoy moscato's. Seems like we were drinking them before they became so vogue. Some of them seem syrupy. Moscato, from my understanding, is supposed to have a light carbonation. I really enjoy the Yellowtail Moscato. Naked grape is pretty good too, but not carbonated.

I love Sebastian's white wine, and their rose isn't bad either. Not that I am opposed to red outright (the best I've had so far was Apothic Red, I enjoy the white better.

Schmitt Sohne is good, and I enjoy Monkey Bay sauvignon blanc.

And who can say no to Beringer's white zin?

Bea's mead-honey wine is pretty good, esp. with cinnamon almonds.

The best wine in the world is the one you enjoy the most.

Man, people have gone CRAZY for Moscato! I guess because it's something non-wine drinkers can drink, like Riesling. I love sweet wine, so I was drinking it before it was cool. Try the Rex Goliath- it's different.

Have you been out to Dakota Winery? It's a fun place. Yummy blueberry wine!

And if you get on their mailing list, San Sebastian and Lakeridge have buy one case, get one free sales every once in a while. I have the BEST recipe for fish tortillas using the rose...

You'd love Quady Electra or Essensia. If you look in the dessert wine section at Jonesville Wine, (you know where that is, right, kitty corner from Publix) they have a bunch of the Quady wines.

Okay...I'll confess. I have a totally unsophisticated wine palate. I like Beringer White Zinfandel and that's it! Can't stand dry wines. Does anyone have any ideas of other wines I might like? I wouldn't mind trying a few others. Reisling has been recommended, but I wonder if it's too sweet....

The duplin winery in North Carolina Baby! This place has muscadine wine to die for and no other wine comes close to these wines for me.
