~~❦~~ The Wine Drinkers' Thread! ~~❦~~

Karoni, if you like sweet wines, you'll probably like many of the german wines as well as muscadine wines. Rieslings are a definite must try. I admit, I've only been to a few wine tastings, but I've had the pleasure of doing so in Germany, France, Switzerland, and America. Wine tastings are your best bet to see what you like. Eiswein is one of my favorite german types of wines and it tends to run on the sweet side so is most often used with deserts.

We are big wine drinkers, but not connoisseurs. We usually get Black Box Pinot Grio or Merlot. My likes and don't likes are pretty simple. I don't like the sweet wines, riesling or muscato, but buy them for my mom when she comes to visit. If I'm out I'll usually order Santa Margarita Pinot Grigio. Other cheap brands we like are Fisheye, Barefoot, Eco Dom. When we were in Dallas, we did splurge for wine from a local winery (Times 10) from time to time. ...but basically, were are wine in a box kind of folk. :)

You could try any Riesling, but you could look for a "dry" Riesling. There's one called Pacific Rim that is drier. Or Chateau Ste. Michelle. You could try Fetzer Gewurztraminer. You could try the Rex Goliath Moscatto. You could try either Pink Truck or White Truck, or Menage a Trois Pink or White. Barefoot Pinot Grigio.

Becca- if you like box wine, try Target Wine Cube!!! I like the Malbec, and the Vintner's Blend, and the Shiraz/Cab, of the reds. I like virtually all the whites, except I haven't tried the Chard. And Publix sells a box called Simply White that is good- I always wonder if Sinply Red is also good, but then I get ticked off that it's like $3 more and never try it. The Wine Cubes go on sale all the time, too.

I believe eiswein is a dessert wine, so it is going to be sweet.

The san sebastian we're talking about is a muscadine, and I love those. I had never heard of that until I came to Florida.

Quite honestly the best advice I can give to anybody who wants to try wine is to try wine. I took a wine course a while ago and the professor, Dr. Vine (no joke) liked to talk about how the best wines are the ones you enjoy. We tried all different kinds of all different prices and you only know what you like from experience. For class we were to grade and rank the wines. My wife now do a similar thing. We set up an excel sheet and every time we try a new wine, we give it a score and record the price if we have it. Prices obviously will vary from store to store, but it offers a range.

After trying several types you'll start to pick out things you like and things you don't like. A wine tasting is a great opportunity for this, or start with cheap wine and work out from there so your investment is small. A $25 bottle of wine may not actually be better than a $10 bottle, if you like the flavor of the cheaper one more.

I'm not a wine snob. I drink what I like. Really can't describe them well. When I find one I like, I usually buy by the case from the local wineries around here. Not cheap stuff either, drat it all. Around $300 - per case.

I'm trying to empty out the wine cellar right now. I mainly drink the local Pinot Noirs. I like the ones from St. Innocent, Brick House, Witness Tree, Sokol Blosser and Argyle. Argyle has some great sparkling wines too, but they don't get out of state much, so when people come here visiting, they are surprised by them. They have a great sparkling Pinot Noir and occasionally a sparkling Rose'.

Did you know that Sideways was written about the Oregon wine country? When they movie was made, they didn't think anyone would know about the Oregon wines, so they changed it to Napa Valley.

I'm drinking a D for Dumper 1998 Anapamu Pinot Noir. I think I opened it before I went to Rich's...plus I finished off the Big Day White and a Charles Shaw reserve Cab- it's okay, but not really my thing. Wine Leftovers Night!

Dynamite

I thought i almost couldnt find this thread!! Im only 20... so i am new to wine and havent tried much, although i do know what i like. I love red wine... i will drink white but it doesnt have the kick that red wine does. Anyways, i tried a new cabernet tonight, and it is called "dynamite" HANDS DOWN BEST WINE I HAVE EVER HAD. It was on sale for about 12.99 a bottle. Very impressed. Has a distinct bitterness at first, but warms up after you drink it. Gotta go get yourself a bottle!!

Reds are usually a lot more drinkable on the second glass, if you let the bottle sit out. But when people think "room temp" means 70-80F- yuck! Reds need to be in the 55ish range to be palatable.

An easy way to post the label without taking the picture yourself is to Google it and save the photo of the label.

You forgot to add that you save the boxes & use them for snake hides! LOL

The boxes make GREAT snake hides! I like the Target mini-cubes for 10 gallons, but I don't buy that size very often. There are enough varietals to coordinate with _any_ morph, though, of the 4-bottle size! One snake has a Simply White box in a 10 gallon. It works okay.

I'm a strict beer drinker, but my partner drinks nothing but wine. He's by no means a connoisseur; he'll drink just about anything red with a preference toward cheap with a unique label. He calls the $2.00 red wine from Wal-Mart his fruit juice and drinks it with a straw straight from the bottle. :nope:

Nanci, I know I have mentioned it somewhere else, but my buddy has a friend that does his own homebrews. He made this Quince wine that is fantastic. Extremely smooth going down. I should be getting a couple of bottles from him in the future (as long as my wife lets me). Though I tend to drink more than I should, when it comes to his homebrews...

Because of the extraordinary generosity of a wine-drinking friend of mine here, I get to taste three bottles of Argyle Pinot Noir, the least of which is about double my splurge bottle of wine budget.

Argyle
2010 Reserve Pinot Noir

Knudsen Vineyards
Willamette Valley AVA, Willamette Valley, Oregon

Nose: I get violet with a lot of alcohol.

Taste: White pepper. Black cherry/red raspberry candy, the kind with the hard outside and the gooey middle. Tannins are perfect. Definitely that raspberry candy. And I think rhubarb- raw, not cooked.

It is very, very good. I am not a Pinot Noir drinker- no reason- I just always pick either a Zin, a Shiraz, a Petite Sirah, a Malbec, or a red blend.

Wines that you like.

Just wanted to share and also add over time the wines that I have tried and like. I main taste are for dry red wines but I do try a few dry whites too. Here are a few pictures of the wines I have in the house now.

Now this is a red that was going for $ 8.99 but it received a rating of 90 points from Robert Parker wine advocate.

This is something I'm sipping now a little different from the dark reds I'm use to but I like it . Under $10.00

I tried this one a year or so ago but I seem to remember I liked it. maybe just for the label. lol Around $10.00 something.

And for a dry white we tried this the other night with some fish we had for dinner. this I think cost about $12.00
