I've had this ootheca for a few months and had no idea when to expect it to hatch. Well, the little mantids made their grand entrance into the world today.

Just thought I'd share.

lol ok so i looked at the picture before reading what you said and I was like what the heck is that?! But then read it and noww understand. They are adorable. I like the 2nd pic, looks cute like that lol

I had one of those we bought from a gardening center, just happened to be there at the right time, pretty incredible how many fit into that lil ootheca isn't it? Are they normal of a special kind?

Thanks for the comments guys!

I'm not really sure what they are. I found it by a gate when we were chasing a calf back into some random gate. I thought it might be Carolina mantids, but I guess I won't really know until they reach adulthood...

That's cool, just make sure to keep them well fed or they will eat eachother till only one is left. My bio teacher told me he hatched them out and try to raise them up. Obviously he failed because he only ended up with one lol.

Too cute! I'd love to try and hatch some of those.
What do you feed them at this size? Do they need some sort of cover? Man, I would have way too many questions about their care...
Thanks for sharing with us. I hope we get to see a progression thread on them.

Which is actually not too bad... I mean what are you supposed to do with 150 mantises? That's a lot of pinhead crickets.

Awww!! When you found their egg... thing.. how did you know what you were looking at? I probably wouldn't have given it a second thought. That would be so neat to raise your own! They're so cool.

They're Praying Mantises, right? My first night moonlighting at McDonald's was their migration or something because the walls outside were COVERED with them. I went outside on my breaks and gathered them all and played with them, lol.

Very true...also the one you'd end up with would be the best of the best...For some reason I now have 'eye of the tiger' playing in the back of my head...

Thoes are the most adorable bugs I've seen in a very long time. congrats on your hatching!! :p

Yeah, I've got a bunch of flightless fruit flies in with them right now. They've been funny to watch, stalking and trying to catch their prey. I'm going to wait until Mat gets here so he can see all of them, then I'm going to release a majority of them in a local park. A few of my bug nerd friends want one, and I've got a little one to keep and raise.

As for the how I knew what it was, I'm a GIANT bug nerd :D. I'm going to set up that green basket thing for the one I'm keeping after I release all of its siblings, but I'm going to keep it in a large glass vial with a stick until it's big enough to not get lost in the basket.

I don't know much about the nymphs, just offer them a lot of food. I took the one I picked out to work today, and let it run around on a container that was covered in first instar moth larvae. It was absolutely adorable. They are quite comical bitty things. I'll definitely post pictures as this little guy molts.
