thin corn snake

Hello everyone. I have a question in regaurds to my normal corn Isabella.
I purchased her almost a year ago at a reptile show. She eats well ( 2 fuzzies every 5-7 days ) never had a regerge. All her sheds have been great. Just shed again a few days ago actually.

My question is she is about 2 and a half feet long but still seems quite slender. She is probably no thicker then my thumb except for right around her middle which is only slightly larger. I don't know her weight I don't currently have anything that weights in grams. Is she around the normal size for a 1 year old snake? Seems very healthy in all other respects. She is getting so long I am going to upgrade the size of her tank on my next paycheck. I was just kind of curious about the width. Thanks:eatpointe

I suppose it depends on how slender your thumb is ;)

I've got '07's that are thicker than my thumb, but I may just have slender thumbs :)

There is a lot of difference in the size of corns at different ages, as they all grow at different rates, so I think as long as she is eating well and seems healthy, then all should be good :)

I think what you want to look out for is the shape of the body rather than the size. You want to see the "loaf of bread" type shape - if the snake is too "round" it may be a sign that it is getting a little heavy, and if the spine is really pronounced and visible then it may be underweight.

I don't have experience with underweight snakes, that is just what I have read.

I have the same question too. My classic corn is Supposily 4-5 months old, and is 13-14 inches and weighs 8g. I was told at this age their heads are usually bigger than their bodies. But i also heard pet stores, like the one i got her from underfeed snakes to keep them small and "cute". JW if i should be feeding her more, and is she underweight? Can i feed her a pinky every 4-5 days and "catch up" for all the underfeeding that was done to her at the pet store. My evidence of under feeding is, the store was feeding her crickets till a week before i got her. So she only had one pinky mouse meal before i got her. Luckily she ate the pinky i gave her with no problem and the lump was gone within 24 hours. After witnessing this and seeing how active she was afterwards, i felt as if she could handle 2 pinkies or 1 1/2, but when i refered to the Munson Plan it says just one pinky.

Whether she is 4-5 months old and 8g, or newly hatched and 8g, I would stick with one pinky, as per the Munson plan. If you rush her into eating more, because you feel she needs to catch up, you may put her health at risk.

In fact, how can you be sure that she is as old as the pet store says, if they were silly enough to believe a corn can survive on crickets as a diet, they probably don't know the ages of their snakes. Well, unless they got her as a hatchling, or bred her themselves and have had her in the shop for 4-5 months :shrugs:

Good point! Well what about the fact that the lump is gone with 24 hours, and she poops a few hours over the 48 hour mark? But i get what your saying 8g's is well 8 grams. Thanks

James, that sounds just about perfect for a baby that size, no matter the age, all my hatchlings this year have been eating and defacating on that exact schedule, and growing like weeds, I might add :D
