Time travel: Not just for sci-fi

I have to agree, that's a ridiculous amount of money to be investing in something that could potentially be so dangerous.
To me this is just another example of the arrogance of the human race. Just because we are smart enough to invent something doesn't always mean it's a good idea to make it happen. Kind of reminds me of the atomic bomb.. So clever and so stupid.
(But hey if the earth sucks itself inside out as a result and that takes four years, we will be right on schedule with the Mayan calendar prediction for 2112 being the date of the end of the world.)

2012, and it's not an end of the world prediction. It's just the end of the Mayan Calendar. My calendar ends December 31, 2008 - should I be worried? ;)

Just like people were afraid a fission reaction would start a chain reaction to destroy the Earth, people are afraid the LHC will create black holes or stranglets to rip apart the Earth. It's not going to happen. The people banding about these 'Repent, for the end is nigh!' predictions have very shaky understandings of the physics involved.

PS. Nuclear technology was responsible for years of peace between the worlds two largest super powers - two super powers who really hated each other.

Imagine, a train load of merchandise. I levitate it with my anti gravity machine. Give it a little push and watch it go coast to coast with out even starting the engine.

Actually, for that, you would need an anti-gravity AND an anti-friction machine. The friction in the air wouldn't let you push the train THAT far, but if you have an anti-friction machine, you could give it a little push, and if you were still standing in the same spot a few hours later, it'd hit you in the back of the head.

LOL I guess I was thinking of the Rush album. "2112"
I should have put some emoticons in my post. I am really not taking the end of the world in four years as serious as all that, I put that last bit about the Maya Calendar because of the previous thread here on CS about that and I really should have put the roll eyes smiley in there.
However I do think the human race is arrogant, that is my belief and all the genius physicists in the world don't impress me as much as the glory of an old growth forest or a river that hasn't been dammed, I simply believe we have messed up this planet quite enough.
And the benefits of nuclear technology to me do not make up for the atrocities in Hiroshima and Nagasaki or the horrors like Chernobyl and Three mile island.

I understand. I was trying to simplify. You got the message.

The horrors of Three Mile Island? How many people died as a result of Three Mile Island?

I mean, I agree that nukes suck, but the human race is almost 7 billion strong and the only way we're going to improve our use of the earth is through scientific advancement.

I agree 100%. If we are stuck with the population then we are going to need a better way of doing things. There isn't a single environmental problem you can name that wouldn't be solved if half the people would move to Mars.

Take a look at google.com. They put something up pertaining to this conversation. I'm sure it will only be there today.
